Breakdown of Experiential Learning Field Placement Programs
Undergraduate School of Business Field Placement
- Field placement is open to fourth year School of Business BBA Majors.
- Students apply and enhance industry specific skill set.
- 100 hours (per semester) of hands-on real-world work with reflective practice.
- Available approx. 1 day/week during Fall and/or Winter Semesters: 12-24 weeks (flexible schedule)
- Work placements can be paid or unpaid in a business-based learning setting (Remote available)
- Workplace Insurance is provided for unpaid* placements
- All students complete Ministry of Labour Health & Safety, & COVID-19 Training
- Hiring period begins 2-3 months ahead of student start; (July & November)
Placement hosts provide student feedback and provide students with an environment (remote or in-person) aimed at meeting the program goals:
- To develop the capacity for reflective practice in organizational settings.
- To develop the capacity to set personalized learning goals and objectives in organizational settings.
- To develop the capacity for critical reflection, including organizational processes and their interdependencies.
- To identify, explore and reflect on the interdependency between academic and experiential learning.
- To apply knowledge and skills acquired from the academic program of study to ‘real life’ organizational settings.
- Develop and practice appropriate workplace etiquette.
Master of Management: Work Integrated Learning Project
- Students from diverse education & professional backgrounds with previous education & employment experience
- Project-based Placement is a requirement for graduation;
- Flexibility in bringing a student on to join/lead a project.
- Interview process to ensure most suitable candidate is selected
- Cohorts available starting in January, May, & September
- Hours for workplace project work can be paid or unpaid*, in-person or remote
- Students on past project placements have developed digital marketing plans, program proposals, new business development, or worked on event administration, or accounting responsibilities for a variety of different organizations across Ontario.
Child & Youth Studies Field Placement
- Field placement is open to fourth year Child & Youth Studies BA Majors.
- Students apply and enhance industry specific skill set.
- 100-200 hours of hands-on real world work with reflective practice.
- Available 1-2 days/week during Fall & Winter Semesters: 12-24 weeks (flexible schedule).
- Work placements are generally unpaid* in a child/youth care, educational, or activity-based learning setting.
- Workplace Insurance is provided for unpaid* placements
- All students complete Ministry of Labour Health & Safety, & COVID-19 Training, First AID CPR & VSS Criminal Record Clearance
- Placement hosts provide student feedback and provide students with a learning-based environment (remote or in-person)
Placement Program Student Objectives
- Develop the capacity to set personalized learning goals related to the workplace placement.
- Demonstrate the ability to reflect critically on organizational processes and their interdependencies.
- Integrate and apply knowledge and skills acquired from the child and youth studies academic program to an organizational setting.
- Describe, critically examine, and articulate in written form the skills developed and knowledge acquired throughout the placement.
- Develop and practice appropriate workplace etiquette.
Policing & Community Well-being Field Placement
- Students learn to bridge theory with field-based learning
- 300-400 minimum hours of hands-on field experience and reflective practice required.
- Students available 1.5-2 days/week (minimum) Fall & Winter Semesters: September-April.
- Work placements are generally unpaid* in social awareness, community planning, and outreach settings.
- All students complete Ministry of Labour Health & Safety, & COVID-19 Training, First AID CPR & VSS Criminal Record Clearance
Students who participate in an internship/field placement in Ontario for academic credit are considered workers under the Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA). Students complete training on Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA), Ministry of Labour Worker Health and Safety Awareness Training and Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS).
*Students on unpaid internships or field placements with their academic institution for-credit are covered by the institution and the Ministry of Advanced Education and Skills Development for workplace insurance in most instances.
