Funding Your Future in Nursing at Trent

At the Trent/Fleming School of Nursing (TFSON), students learn to lead with confidence and compassion in a profession that is deeply connected to people, communities, and real-world impact. The TFSON is Canada's only university nursing program with a fully internationally accredited simulation centre. Through hands-on simulation, clinical placements beginning in first year, small class sizes, and close mentorship from faculty, Trent nursing students graduate prepared to thrive in today’s evolving health-care system.

The Ontario Learn and Stay Grant (OLSG) helps eligible students pursue careers in high-demand health-care fields by providing funding to support direct educational costs for students in eligible Trent/Fleming School of Nursing programs. Through strong regional partnerships and local placement opportunities, Trent nursing students graduate ready to make an impact in communities across Eastern Ontario and beyond where skilled health-care professionals are needed most.

Eligible Trent/Fleming School of Nursing programs include:

  • Collaborative Bachelor of Science in Nursing (B.Sc.N.)
  • Compressed Bachelor of Science in Nursing (B.Sc.N.)
  • Master of Science in Nursing (M.Sc.N.) for 2026-27 academic year only

The Ontario Learn and Stay Grant (OLSG) provides students with full grant funding for tuition, books, and other direct educational expenses. In accepting the OLSG, you are accepting to fulfil a service commitment in the Eastern Region . Applications are submitted through the OSAP website at www.ontario.ca/OSAP .

To learn more about OLSG, visit the Ontario Government website

What Does the Ontario Learn and Stay Grant Cover?

What is Funded through the Grant:

Eligible students may receive funding to help cover direct educational costs, including:

  • Tuition and ancillary fees
  • Textbooks and supplies, as determined by Financial Aid and the OSAP/OLSG policy

What is not Funded through the Grant:

Any costs outside of direct educational costs such as:

  • Living expenses
  • Childcare costs
  • Travel/commuting costs

In return, graduates commit to working in the region where they studied after graduation for a period tied to the length of funding received. Regions are based on Ontario Public Health Unit boundaries. Trent University is located in the East Region .

Eligibility and Requirements

To be eligible for the OLSG, you must:

  • Be a full-time student in the Compressed or Collaborative Bachelor of Science in Nursing (B.Sc.N.) programs at Trent's Peterborough campus who started in 2023-24 or later
  • Be a full-time student studying in the Master of Science in Nursing (M.Sc.N.) program in the 2026-27 year only
    • approval beyond 26/27 is under review by the Ministry
  • Meet residency rules as defined by OLSG
    • Be an Ontario resident
    • Be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or protected person
  • After graduating, commit to working in the same region where you studied and in the profession that you studied for a minimum of 6 months for every year of full year of study funded by the OLSG, up to a maximum of 24 months. You will receive a Notice of Service Commitment letter which will indicate your service commitment obligations.
  • Not be receiving funding from specified government programs

Applications can only be submitted for 2026-27 and forward. Retroactive applications (25/26 or earlier) cannot be submitted.

Key Points

  1. Grants are intended to cover the cost of full-time educational expenses
  2. Your service commitment is based on how long you receive the grant for (maximum 24 months at one time)
  3. If you do not fulfil your service commitment, your grants will turn into Ontario student loans that must be repaid through the National Student Loans Service Centre (NSLSC)
  4. Eligibility is not based on income/resources
  5. You may also receive Full-Time OSAP funding while receiving OLSG
  6. You must re-apply for the grant each year and re-confirm your commitment to staying and working in the region after you graduate.

Service Commitment

Students who receive OLSG while at Trent must fulfill a service commitment within the Eastern Region . You agree to the service commitment as part of your application for OLSG.

When you enter into your service commitment time frame, you will be responsible for completing your Verification of Employment and submitting this electronically to the Ministry.

Your grant funding will be converted to a repayable loan if you do not meet the required conditions.

How Long is the Service Commitment?

A typical B.Sc.N. student who completes a 4-year nursing degree can anticipate up to 24 months of a commitment after they graduate. If you are in the compressed or accelerated collaborate program, your service commitment may be less.

How to Apply

Applications are now open. Students apply for the Ontario Learn and Stay Grant through a separate application on the OSAP website.

Students starting in the 2026-27 academic year:

  • You must register for an OSAP account if the 2026–2027 academic year is your first time applying for OSAP or the Ontario Learn and Stay Grant.
  • Students enrolled in an eligible Nursing program at Trent are encouraged to apply as soon as possible to receive a funding assessment prior to Fall 2026.

Students enrolled in previous academic years:

  • Students who started their studies in 2023–2024 or later are eligible for the Ontario Learn and Stay Grant beginning in 2026-27. Previous years of study are not eligible for this funding at Trent.
  • If you have an existing account, log in to your OSAP account with your credentials to apply for OLSG funding for the 2026–27 academic year.
  • If you do not have an existing OSAP account, register to apply for OLSG.

Note: You must apply for the grant each year to receive it. If you do not apply for the grant in subsequent years after receiving it, you must confirm your enrolment in an eligible program to prevent your grant from being converted to a repayable loan.

The Financial Aid office will receive and process applications. Any questions can be directed to financialaid@trentu.ca .
