OSAP & Internships

This information is specifically for students who will be participating in ADMN 4890Y for either a 6, 8, 12 or 16 month internship.

OSAP Eligibility:

While internships and co-ops are similar, OSAP funds them very differently. Unlike co-op terms, internships are optional breaks in study (fully away from school) that are paid, full-time work, for 6,8,12, or 16 consecutive months. This means that students are not eligible for full-time OSAP while completing their internship.

Students can still apply for part-time OSAP (grant and loan funding) for the initial semester of their internship, as this is when tuition and ancillary fees are billed for the course at 1.0 credits (40% course load). If you are a student with a registered disability, please contact the Financial Aid Office as you may be eligible for full-time funding in that initial semester.

Students are responsible for ensuring their OSAP applications are updated to include their internship. If you are starting an internship right after a full-time semester of studying, the Financial Aid office may need to adjust your OSAP application and reassess your funding. Please contact Financial Aid to discuss the impacts to your funding in detail.

Loan Repayment:

Students in an internship usually enter repayment of their previous OSAP loans before they return to their studies at Trent. Repayment of OSAP loans begins 6-months after your last confirmed full-time study date. This means that the exact date of repayment will be different for each student, depending on when you were last confirmed with OSAP as full-time.

Repaying your loans

Repayment options can be discussed by contacting the National Student Loan Service Centre (NSLSC). You may be eligible for payment deferral or payment assistance through the Repayment Assistance Plan (RAP) offered through NSLSC. If you return to full-time studies after your internship, repayment can be paused by confirming your enrollment with OSAP
