Options for Hiring a Business or Economics Student

We offer three dynamic options for hiring a Trent Business or Economics student: co-ops, internships, and placements, each designed to connect your organization with talented, motivated students ready to contribute.

Co-op

Co-op is a structured program where students alternate between academic study and full-time, paid work terms. Work terms are 4 months in length, and some are consecutive, creating 8-month terms. Trent School of Business offers four co-op streams: Business, Accounting, Economics, and Accounting & Economics. Each program allows students to gain hands-on experience in their field while contributing meaningfully to real-world projects.

Internships

Internships are full-time, paid work experiences for fourth-year students, lasting 6, 8, 12, or 16 months. They provide employers with access to emerging talent who apply academic knowledge to practical projects in fields such as accounting, marketing, human resources, finance, and management.

Placements

Placements are part-time work experiences for fourth-year business students, lasting a minimum of 100 hours over a term. Placement opportunities may be paid or unpaid. Students engage in meaningful tasks and projects with local organizations, applying course knowledge while developing professional skills and networks.

Field placement is open to fourth year School of Business BBA Majors.

  • 1 day/week during Fall and/or Winter Semesters: 12-24 weeks.
  • Workplace Insurance is provided for unpaid* placements.
  • Email: employerengagement@trentu.ca to be notified when recruitment cycle begins.

Placement hosts provide student feedback and provide students with an environment (remote or in-person) aimed at meeting the program goals:

  1. To develop the capacity for reflective practice in organizational settings.
  2. To develop the capacity to set personalized learning goals and objectives in organizational settings.
  3. To develop the capacity for critical reflection, including organizational processes and their interdependencies.
  4. To identify, explore and reflect on the interdependency between academic and experiential learning.
  5. To apply knowledge and skills acquired from the academic program of study to ‘real life’ organizational settings.
  6. Develop and practice appropriate workplace etiquette.

Child & Youth Studies Field Placement

  • Field placement is open to fourth year Child & Youth Studies BA majors.
  • Students apply and enhance industry specific skill set.
  • 100-200 hours of hands-on work with reflective practice.
  • Available 1-2 days/week during Fall & Winter Semesters: 12-24 weeks (flexible schedule).
  • Work placements are in a child/youth care, educational, or activity-based learning setting.
  • Workplace Insurance is provided for unpaid* placements
  • All students complete Ministry of Labour Health & Safety Training, First AID CPR & VSS Criminal Record Clearance
  • Placement hosts provide student feedback and provide students with a learning-based environment

Placement Program Student Objectives

  1. Develop the capacity to set personalized learning goals related to the workplace placement.
  2. Demonstrate the ability to reflect critically on organizational processes and their interdependencies.
  3. Integrate and apply knowledge and skills acquired from the child and youth studies academic program to an organizational setting.
  4. Describe, critically examine, and articulate in written form the skills developed and knowledge acquired throughout the placement.
  5. Develop and practice appropriate workplace etiquette.

Master of Management

  • Cohorts available starting in January, May, & September

Students who participate in an internship/field placement in Ontario for academic credit are considered workers under the Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA). Students complete training on Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA), Ministry of Labour Worker Health and Safety Awareness Training and Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS).

*Students on unpaid internships or field placements with their academic institution for-credit are covered by the institution and the Ministry of Advanced Education and Skills Development for workplace insurance in most instances.
