From humble beginnings with a few course offerings at Eastdale Collegiate, to a dedicated campus now home to nearly 3,000 students from around the world, Trent University Durham Greater Toronto Area (GTA)'s first 50 years have been marked by growth, collaboration, and innovation. Through it all Trent Durham has kept its core values at the centre of all that we do - dedicated to supporting and developing our close-knit community of scholars, through small class sizes, access to world-class professors and researchers, and opportunities to get involved and gain experience in our surrounding communities.

I feel fortunate to be leading Trent Durham into its second half-century. We will be building on the strong foundation of personalized learning and career opportunities for Trent students in collaboration with regional and global partners. Trent aims to build risk takers, solution finders, critical thinkers—all forms of leadership that fit perfectly with the ethos of leadership and growth we see in the City of Oshawa and the Region of Durham.

What truly defines Trent Durham is the community we’ve built—a community rooted in the values of collaboration, growth, and resilience. At the heart of Trent Durham’s story is a deep commitment to innovation, education, and the idea that a university is more than just a place to learn—it’s a hub for growth, creativity, and connection,” said VP Henderson. “I am incredibly proud of what we have built together.

Dr. Scott Henderson, interim vice-president of Trent Durham

The expansion of this campus—both in its physical presence and in the breadth of opportunities it provides for students—has been remarkable. The work we are doing here at Trent Durham, constructing new buildings and adding new programs, is really about transforming the student experience. The addition of new residence spaces, career-focused academic programs, and enhanced experiential learning opportunities ensures that every student who steps onto this campus is equipped not only with knowledge but also with the tools to make a meaningful impact in their communities and the world.

Doug Kirk ‘70, chair of Trent’s Board of Governors

As we reflect on our 50 years as a region, we recognize that our future success will be driven by education and innovation. A talent-driven economy, like ours, requires an increasingly skilled and educated workforce. The institutions in Durham Region, particularly Trent University Durham, are instrumental in developing this talent.

    John Henry, Durham Regions chair

  • Headshot of Jim Lee

As we celebrate these dual milestones—50 years of Trent University Durham and 100 years of the City of Oshawa—we are reminded of how far we’ve come together. Our past is rich with achievement, but our future holds even greater promise.

Jim Lee, councillor, City of Oshawa
