2024 tuition tax receipts are available on the student's myTrent portal

Tuition and Education Deduction Tax Certificate - T2202

The tuition tax credit allows you to reduce any income tax you may owe.  The Tuition and Enrollment Certificate (T2202) will be available in late February and can be accessed by logging into your myTrent portal

The T2202 certificate is not mailed to students. Should a revision of your Tuition and Enrollment Certificate (T2202) be required, a charge of $25.00 will be charged. This includes adding your social insurance number (SIN#) to your T2202 or re-calculating the amount due to late payment of fees.

To find your tax forms:

  • Log into your MyTrent portal
  • Click the Finances Tab
  • Click the Tax Forms icon
  • Open each link and print your eligible tax forms

Students with a Disability

The T2202 reports the actual part-time or full-time enrolment status for all students, including those students with a disability.

Your T2202 is solely based on the number of credits you were enrolled in the University and the eligible tuition fees you paid for them. As such, we cannot change your T2022 form to reflect full-time status for full-time fees that you did not pay.

Note: If you are eligible for the Disability Tax Credit (DTC) or had, in the year, a mental or physical impairment and a doctor has certified that you cannot reasonably be expected to be enrolled as a full-time student because of the effects of this impairment, you would note this on page 2, of schedule 11 under 2024 Enrolment Information on your T1 tax return. This informs CRA that you may be considered full-time for other provisions within the Income Tax Act and various provincial and territorial programs.

If you have additional questions, please contact the CRA directly.

Social Insurance Number (SIN)

Social Insurance Number Requirement for T2202 Forms

The T2202 form (formerly T2202A) will need to include the student’s Social Insurance Number (SIN); this was already a requirement for the T4A form.  Trent University, as the issuer of the T2202 and T4A forms, has a legislated obligation to ask for and report SIN numbers on the forms.  For this reason, students are required to submit their SIN number to Trent University through their myTrent portal.
For more information visit Canada Revenue Agency

Residence

Residence fees cannot be claimed as rent for income tax purposes. Under the Income Tax Act, universities are exempt from paying municipal property taxes. We do not issue a tax receipt for residence fees or meal plan payments.

The Ontario Income Tax Act stipulates that all students living in designated university (tax-exempted) student residences are limited to an Ontario Energy and Property Tax Credit claim based on an occupancy cost of $25 for the time they resided in the student residence. Therefore, the amount that can be claimed for income tax purposes is $25 and not the full amount of residence fees paid. On Line 6114 (Student Residences) of your income tax return, tick the box to claim $25 as your occupancy cost for the part of the year you lived in residence.

For more information and to view the list of designated student residences, please visit the Ontario Ministry of Finance website and review the "Frequently Asked Questions" on Property Tax Credits.

FAQ

Q: What if the address on my T2202 is incorrect?  Do I need a new T2202?

A: No. You may submit the T2202 information as received even if the address is incorrect.  According to CRA regulations, it is not necessary for students to submit the T2202 with the income tax return but they must produce it if it is requested by CRA.  To update your address, go to mytrent

Q: The amount on my T2202 tuition tax receipt is less than the amount of my registration fees paid?

A. The University follows the Canada Revenue guidelines on eligible tuition fees to prepare the T2202 Tuition Tax receipt. Not all fees paid are eligible, visit the CRA website for more information.

Q. Scholarships, Bursary Tax Slip - T4A

A. T4A is issued by the University to students who have received awards, including scholarships, bursaries and waivers.  T4A tax forms are located beside the T2202 icon. These can be accessed on your myTrent portal.

Q. Does my course qualify for a T2202?

A. The Canadian Revenue Agency (CRA) requires Trent University to issue a T2202 to all qualifying students. A qualifying student must meet the following conditions:

  • Enrolled in a specified educational program or a qualifying educational program
  • 16 years of age or older
  • Course(s) are at least three consecutive weeks in length
  • 12 hours per month spent on courses in a program. (If the courses are not at the post-secondary level, courses must be taken to get or improve skills in an occupation.)
  • Tuition fees paid equal or exceed $100
  • Student personally paid the tuition fees. (If your employer or company paid on your behalf or you were reimbursed, you are not eligible to claim your T2202.)

For more information, please review the CRA requirements
