Co-op Program Requirements

General Co-op Requirements: 

All of Trent's 30+ co-op streams require: 

  • Co-op students to be registered as full-time students
  • All of the academic terms and work terms to be successfully completed in order to graduate from the co-op program
  • For the co-op alternating programs: All work terms to be 12-16 week, full-time (35 hours/week), paid opportunities totalling 420 hours
  • For the co-op continuing programs: The single work term to be 12-months, full-time (35 hours/week), paid
     

Foundational Co-op Courses:

COOP 2000H: Foundations for Co-op Success

A foundational career development course to prepare co-op students for first work terms. Designed to support student professional development through career exploration, skill-building, and self-reflection. Topics include resumes, cover letters, labour market information, job search strategies, interviews, networking, EDI, professionalism, and the co-operative education process. 

COOP 4000H: Pathways for Career Success

A capstone co-op course that supports students in integrating their co-op experiences to navigate the labour market and workforce upon graduation. Students will further build transferable skills essential for workplace success and focus on advanced networking strategies, personal branding, post-work term support, full-time job search support, and skills development. 

COOP 5000H: Professional Foundations (Graduate Co-op Programs)

A foundational course designed to support students with the knowledge needed for their co-op work term. This course offers the opportunity for career exploration, work term preparation and critical inquiry into the field of career development. Topics include resumes, cover letters, job search strategies, interviews and the co-operative education process.

Undergraduate Co-op Student Requirements:

Admission Requirements

A minimum 80% cumulative average and a minimum of 60% in ENG4U. 

​Some co-op programs have additional requirements:​

  • Accounting, Accounting & Economics, Business, Computer Science: A 4U Math
  • BSc Artificial Intelligence: MHF4U
  • Chemistry: SCH4U, MHF4U, MCV4U, and SPH4U
  • Conservation Biology: MHF4U or MCV4U, SCH4U and SBI4U
  • Financial Science: MHF4U or MCV4U
  • Kinesiology: SBI4U, one of MHF4U, MCV4U or MDM4U, and SCH4U or SPH4U
  • Psychology: Minimum 6 Grade 12 4U or 4M courses
  • Software Engineering: MHF4U and one of MCV4U or MDM4U 

Transfer credits: Applicants with transfer credits are eligible for direct entry to co-op programs. Up to 5.0 of your transfer credits may count towards your degree; however, this varies by program. For information about individual programs, please visit the Transfer to Trent University website.

Preparing for Work Terms

75% cumulative average throughout your study terms. Some co-op programs have more specific progression requirements:

  • Chemistry: 75% CGPA and 75% in each required second year Chemistry course
  • Computer Science: 75% cumulative average in all COIS courses
  • Financial Science: 70% CGPA and 75% cumulative average in all ADMN, ECON, and MATH courses

COOP 2000H and COOP 4000H with a minimum 65% grade requirement (for applicable programs) or career prep workshops

Accessing Careerspace resources (attending workshops, reviewing tip sheets, and watching our helpful videos!)

Professional ConductCo-op students must abide by the Trent Charter of Student Rights and Responsibilities and conduct themselves in a respectful, ethical, and professional manner while on study terms and work terms.
Work Terms & Evaluations

Students will follow a specific workflow for their co-op work term which may include completing learning objectives, a midterm evaluation, a final evaluation, and a final work term report or presentation for each work term experience. 

Employers will also submit a midterm and final evaluation.

Once all documents have been received and upon a successful employer evaluation, students will have officially completed their co-op work term.

Three non-credit co-op work terms (COOP 2100P, 3100P, 4100P) are required to graduate with co-op.

To make sure you’re prepared and ready to hit the ground running in your work terms, Trent has developed Career and Workforce Readiness modules through funding from eCampus Ontario and the Government of Ontario.

These modules will give you an opportunity to practice, reflect and develop the strategies you’ll need to get started, refine your process, or put the finishing touches on a current project.
