Insurance, Benefits, and Bursaries

Student Health Services is available to all current students who are registered at Trent University Symons Campus.  Most appointments are free of charge as long as you have provincia/territorial or UHIP insurance coverage. For all appointments, you will be required to show your Provincial Health Card (e.g. OHIP) or International Insurance card (COWAN), along with your current student card.

Ontario Students: OHIP (Ontario Health Card)

OHIP covers physician services, hospitalization, and most imaging and laboratory services. Dental visits, audiologist, and optometry visits are not covered by OHIP. Please refer to the Trent Student Benefit Plan for coverage information.

Students From Other Provinces/Territories

If you have a valid health card from another province or territory, Trent Student Health Services will bill directly to your home province or territory. For students from Quebec, we will require you to sign a claim form for each time you have an appointment with a physician. We will then submit the form directly to Quebec (RAMQ) to request reimbursement.

International Students: UHIP COWAN

If you are an international student, UHIP COWAN insurance will pay for most physician services and medical tests, as well as for hospital visits. Please note that if you have a chronic medical condition and you need to seek care at the hospital, this may not be covered under UHIP COWAN. Please contact Trent International (uhip@trentu.ca) for more information about your coverage.

Click here for some more information about accessing Health Services as an international student.

Students with no insurance

It is very important to make sure that you have health insurance, either through your province/territory, or through UHIP COWAN, so that you do not end up with unexpected medical expenses. If you do not have insurance, you will be responsible for payment if you need to seek medical care. If you are unsure if you have insurance, please reach out to us.

Student Benefits for Extended Health, Medication, and Dental

The Trent Central Student Association offers a student benefit plan for extended health care covered, medications, and dental. Please visit the TCSA website for more information on coverage.

Student Bursaries

The Trent Central Student Association offers a wide range health-related financial supports for students. These include:

Gardasil Reimbursement: The TCSA will reimburse 80% of each Gardasil vaccine received at Trent Student Health Services.

Gender-Affirming Care Grant: This fund was created to provide trans and gender non-confirming Trent students access to the funds they need to purchase gender-affirming items or services such as binders, packers, undergarments, hair removal services, name and legal document changes.

Health and Dental Financial Relief Fund: This fund offers coverage for expenses that may incur that are not covered by the benefits plan or that exceed the plan limits. All expenses under the health and dental umbrella will be considered, including counselling, dental emergencies, eye wear, weighted blankets, etc.

Keep It Bright Light Therapy Subsidy: This program provides students reimbursement for the purchase of a light therapy lamp for an amount up to $60 to assist with the prevalence of seasonal affective disorder (SAD) during the winter months. Not sure if a light therapy lamp is for you? Health Services offers short-term loan of lamps - please contact us for more information!
