Gender Affirming Care Services at Health Services
Services are for gender diverse and trans individuals and include consultation with a knowledgeable physician about options related to gender affirming care, prescribing of hormone therapy, administration of hormone injections and teaching on how to self-administer, and surgical planning and support.
How do I start receiving gender affirming care?
Call Health Services at 705-748-1481 and let reception know that you would like a new gender affirming care appointment. First appointments are booked for 50 minutes to give you and the provider lots of time to discuss your needs. If you have never been seen before at Health Services, please complete the online registration form before calling.
I already see a provider elsewhere for gender affirming care, can I still be seen at Health Services?
We encourage students who have started seen a provider elsewhere for Gender Affirming Care to continue with that provider for continuity of care. If you would like a nurse at Health Services to administer your injections, we can set up appointments for that. Likewise, if you have an established hormone therapy and are looking for a renewal of medications because you are from out of province we can you an appointment with one of our physicians.
If you have any questions please do not hesitate to give us a call or send an e-mail!
Do I need to know if I want hormone therapy and/or a surgical procedure before I can have a gender affirming care appointment?
Nope! The first appointment is an opportunity to discuss your options with a health care provider.
Are there any costs associated with Gender Affirming Care supports?
There is no cost to see the physician and/or nurse at Health Services. These visits are covered by your provincial/territorial health plan or, for international students, by the University Health Insurance Plan (UHIP). Hormone therapy can be at least partially covered through benefit plans. All students have access to the Student VIP benefits (trentcentral.ca/benefits) unless you have opted-out. Other gender affirming supports, such as binders, hair removal, and speech modification are not part of the services available at Health Services; however, these may be covered under the TCSA's Gender Affirming Care Grant (trentcentral.ca/student-funding).
How does Student Health Services ensure confidentiality and privacy?
Your privacy is taken seriously at Trent Student Health Services. We are bound by ethics and law (PHIPA) to keep your information confidential. Your express consent is required before any information can be shared with anyone outside of your circle of care. If you have any concerns about how your health information is kept or disseminated, please contact us or reach out to Trent's privacy office at privacyinformation@trentu.ca
