What buildings are considered Science Facilities?

The Science Facilities are comprised of the Chemical Sciences Building, the Environmental Sciences Center (or Building),  the Science Complex,  the DNA Building and the Life and Health Sciences Center.

How do I get or request after hours access to the Science Buildings?

»Visit our Requesting Access to Buildings & Rooms page.

How do I find out about safety training and schedules of courses?

Much of the Training is online now but there are training courses offered by the Environmental Health and Safety Office.

Science Facilities may send out periodic reminders to supervisors advising them of training course options and/or requirements

Individual training for topics such as liquid nitrogen or autoclave training can be arranged with Scott Roscoe scottroscoe@trentu.ca

How do I book the use of Environmental Chambers?

Environmental chambers in ESC A & C wings are booked through the Science Facilities-- contact angelasikma@trentu.ca

Environmental chambers in Life and Health Sciences Center Block D should be booked through the Biology Department.

The Animal Care Facility has environmental chambers for use with animals. Contact jallen@trentu.ca

What do I do if the fumehood is in alarm or not working?

If a fume hood monitor goes into alarm or you notice that the fume hood doesn't seem to be working properly;

  1. You should stop all work in the fume hood (provided it is safe to do so)*
  2. Cap or seal open sources of volatile chemicals.
  3. Close the fume hood sash.
  4. Contact Facilities Management (FM) at 705-748-1011 ext. 1366 (or by email at Fixit@trentu.ca). Advise them of the building and lab number and that the fume hood is in alarm and not working properly.
  5. Post a notice on the fume hood "Do Not Use, Fume hood Not Working" and inform your co-workers and supervisor.
  6. Contact Science Facilities-- Scott Roscoe or Angela Sikma

*If you are unable to make the situation in the fume hood safe, and it is after normal business hours or holiday, contact Security at 705-748-1333.

What do I do if I believe that mail or shipped packages are missing?

Step 1.  Contact the shipper to determine if it was signed for on delivery or where it was delivered to on campus.

Step 2.  Contact your colleagues to see if someone else in your lab group picked it up.

Step 3.  After completing Steps 1 and 2, contact Shipping & Receiving src@trentu.ca or 705-748-1011 ext 7433 for further assistance.

How do I get access to Liquid Nitrogen?

To access the liquid nitrogen filling station you first need to be trained. Contact ScottRoscoe@trentu.ca  to arrange for this.

What do I do if my office/lab is too hot or too cold?

If you find your office is too hot or too cold contact the Facilities Management at fixit@trentu.ca.  Please be sure to supply the building and room number.  Please do not attempt to adjust the thermostat.

Note: during Spring and Fall or what is referred to as the 'shoulder seasons', it is difficult to regulate building temperatures. Cooling or heat has to be left on to compensate for the transition to either Summer or Winter temperatures.

How do I dispose of a full sharps container?

If your sharps container is full (it should be a yellow container with a plastic cap), cap the container,  label it "Full" and place on the floor next to the regular waste receptacle. Do not put it in the waste container! Caretaking will pick it up. Contact Science Facilities  (Scott Roscoe or Angela Sikma) to pick up a new one.

How do I dispose of chemical waste?

Please see the section Chemical Waste in the "»Disposal of Laboratory Waste" web page.
