Training

Training is a crucial aspect of the Science Safety program. Training is provided to ensure the health and safety of all workers, students, and volunteers, protection of property, and to ensure legislative compliance.

The following training modules are mandatory for all persons working in Trent University science spaces, and must be completed at least once every 3 years:

  • Science Safety Program Core Principles
  • Lab Safety Orientation
  • WHMIS

Additional training may be required as per your specific duties. Workers and supervisors should review all available Science Safety modules and discuss what should be completed by referring to the Trent University Training Matrix.

Employee directions to access Science Safety training:

Access the training through the “MyTraining” tab in the Employee Portal in VIP .

User guides for using the training module in VIP are available for Employees and Managers under the VIP section on the Human Resources website.

Student directions to access Science Safety training:

  1. Login to Blackboard and select the Organizations tab from the navigation menu on the left side of the page.
  2. To enroll in the course, select the Organization Catalog from the upper right corner of the Organization page.

  4. Once the results are displayed, select the down arrow beside the course title. This arrow becomes illuminated when you hover your mouse over the course title.
  5. Click the Enroll button and then Submit.

If you encounter computer issues with completing a module, taking a quiz etc. try A) clear the browser history including cache and cookies, B) use an incognito window C) use a different browser. If these steps do not resolve the issue in VIP or Blackboard, contact healthandsafety@trentu.ca.

Instructions with screenshots are available here: Self-Enroll in the Science Safety Program

For any issues in Blackboard or VIP, please contact healthandsafety@trentu.ca.

Non-Employee / Unpaid Appointments are for individuals who are not already affiliated with the university as a paid employee or a student of the university (i.e. board members, volunteers, interns, temporary visitors, adjunct faculty, professor emeritus, postdoctoral fellow, visiting scholars, Fleming / George Brown / Ontario Tech paid faculty who teach at Trent, etc.) may require access to VIP to complete mandatory training. Visit the Non-Employee / Unpaid Appointments page for further instruction.

For information on other employee mandatory training outside of the Science Safety program, visit the Health and Safety website.
