Trent-led Research Offers Understanding into Role of Microbes and Carbon Cycling in Climate Change Efforts. Trent News, February 7, 2024. Findings from Trent researchers published in Nature Communications could help develop effective strategies in preserving soil carbon.
A Trent University-led study, recently published by the internationally renowned science journal Nature Communications, shows some types of carbon compounds can persist longer than others in the natural environment because they resist degradation by bacteria and fungi – providing invaluable opportunities for mitigating climate change through vital understanding of how different types of carbon degrade in the natural environment. The findings from Trent’s Ecosystems and Global Change Group, led by Dr Andrew Tanentzap, Canada Research Chair in Climate Change and Northern Ecosystems and Dr Erik Emilson, adjunct professor in Trent’s Environmental & Life Sciences Graduate Program, recognize Trent’s dedication to innovative research, and a significant achievement in our understanding of what drives carbon cycling.
Trent’s multidisciplinary experts unite in NSERC funded project to accelerate and simplify monitoring of carbon sequestration, Trent News, January 16, 2024. A team of experts from Trent School of the Environment have been awarded a $750,000 grant from the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) Missions Grant for anthropogenic greenhouse gas research, which aims to enhance farmers' adoption of regenerative agriculture practices. The project is co-led by Trent agroecologist Dr Kira Borden to develop new on-farm monitoring techniques and technologies that monitor the success of carbon sequestration efforts made by farmers more quickly and easily.
