In a changing economy, the skills that students gain through study in the humanities will prove invaluable – perhaps also immeasurable, when considered alongside Ontario’s new performance-based funding model for universities.

In a recent column in the Ottawa Citizen, Dr. Robert Wright, history professor at Trent University Durham GTA, speaks to the important role the humanities play in shaping our future leaders and how this role may be at risk of being overlooked in the new funding model.

“The humanities imparts to its practitioners a set of skills that are perfectly suited to an ever-changing information economy,” writes Dr. Robert Wright. “From my tiny corner of the national intellectual firmament, I can report that some of the humanities grads with whom I have had direct contact are enjoying distinguished careers in law, journalism, communications, documentary – and feature film-making, teaching at every level and, of course, writing vocations of every description. Several are today serving at the summit of the juridical professions, government bureaucracies, the diplomatic corps and NGOs. One is a provincial premier.”
