What is License Plate Recognition Technology?
License Plate Recognition (LPR) technology is used with a patrol vehicle to monitor parked vehicles. It consists of software, a high speed camera and an integrated GPS. They system works by identifying the license plate on parked cars and validating it against those registered in the system to ensure that every car parked on campus has a permit associated with it.
Why is Trent using License Plate Recognition?
License Plate Recognition (LPR) will help Parking Service provide a better customer experience for those parking on campus. It will eliminate the need to utilize physical hanging permits or printed tickets from pay-and-display machines. This technology will allow for more flexibility in how the system is administered, including making carpooling and changing vehicles easier and eliminating the need for return trips to the vehicle to place a pay-and-display ticket. Another benefit of LPR technology s that it is no longer necessary o wait in line at the Parking Services office to pick-up your permit if you have registered and paid online.
Do I need to inform Parking Services when I drive a different vehicle to Campus?
As long as the vehicle is registered to your parking account, there is no need to inform Parking Services that you have changed vehicles. However, only one vehicle per permit is allowed to park on campus at the same time. If the License Plate Recognition technology detects multiple vehicles registered to the same permit on campus at the same time, a ticket will be issued.
Why do you sell more permits than there are spaces?
Due to class and work schedules, not everyone who purchases a permit is on campus at the same time. This enables us to sell more permits than there are spaces so that as many people as possible can access parking at Trent. On any regular day, everyone with a permit should have no problem finding a parking space on campus.
Whats there are no available spaces in the lot next to my office or class?
It is recommended that individuals commuting to campus plan ahead and account for the time required to find parking space and walk their destination. The interacting parking map on the Parking Services website provides the average walking time to any building on campus from any parking lot. Typically, demand is greater on the East Bank tan on the West Bank, especially from September 1 to mid-October. Persons working or studying in the science buildings may find it more convenient and less stressful to park on the West Bank and take the short walk across the Faryon Bridge to their building.
Can I park in any lot or area?
Parking is permitted only in designated parking spaces, in accordance with the permit you hold. Parking on shoulders, grass and in non-designated areas is prohibited and will result in a violation.

HotSpot, pay-and-display, and temporary permits offer greater flexibility in where you may park, however, they are still subject to certain restrictions. Be sure to familiarize yourself with the conditions associated with your permit.
I have classes at Traill College. Can I park there with a regular permit?
Parking at Traill College is only available to regular permit holders that live or work at Traill as well as premium permit holders. Free on street parking is available for up to three hours in the immediate vicinity of Traill College.
I am required to work overnight, do I have to park in P, T, U or CC lots?
Employees who must work overnight will be allowed to park overnight in other lots on campus if their supervisor advises Parking Services by email at parking@trentu.ca.
How are parking prices at Trent determined?
Parking rates on campus are comparative to rates charged by the City of Peterborough and other large institutions in the community. Trent University has one of the lowest parking rates among other universities in Ontario. Additionally, Parking Services at Trent receives no tax dollar or tuition fees to fund its operations. Revenue to supper the maintenance, administration and construction of parking facilities and roadways on campus are derived from parking fees which reflect the actual cost of providing parking facilities.
If I don't want to purchase a permit, what are my options for commuting to campus?
