National, Transnational and Global Literatures

As the titles of many of our courses suggest (British Literature, American Literature, Canadian Literature, Irish Literature), literature has always been an important part of nation building, creating national myths and defining national identities. Today, when it often seems that transnational and global forces are more powerful than nations and nation states, literature turns its attention to new questions about identity, cosmopolitanism, migration and globalization.

If you are interested in how literature addresses national and transnational identities, and how it responds to an increasingly globalized world, consider building your English program around these courses:

  • ENGL-CUST 2528: West Indian Storytelling (see Cultural Studies)
  • ENGL-2600Y: Documenting Canada ( see Canadian Studies)
  • ENGL 2609H: Contagion
  • ENGL 3300Y/3301H: American Literature: Back to the Future, Forward to the Past
  • ENGL 3304Y/3305H: Modern American Fiction
  • ENGL 3306Y/3307H: Latino/Latina American Literature
  • ENGL 3308Y/3309H: African American Literature
  • ENGL 3410Y/3411H: Twentieth-Century British Literature: History, Politics, Culture
  • ENGL 3412Y/3413H: Twentieth-Century British Literature: Literary Movements and Genres
  • ENGL 3421H: Modern Irish Literature
  • ENGL 3451H: Contemporary African Fiction
  • ENGL 3481H: Indigenous Fiction
  • ENGL 3483H: Indigenous Poetry
  • ENGL 3500Y/3501H: I Am Canadian
  • ENGL 3502Y/3503H: Contemporary CanLit (1960–Now)
  • ENGL 3504Y/3505H: Where is Here? An Examination of Space and Place in Canadian Literature
  • ENGL 3506Y/3507H: Canadian Women’s Writing
  • ENGL 3707H: Literature and Globalization
  • ENGL 4300Y/4301H: Advanced Studies in American Literature
  • ENGL 4450Y/4451H: Postcolonial Texts
  • ENGL 4500Y/4501H: Advanced Studies in Canadian Literature

Other programs that offer courses in transnational and global studies and world literature include International Development Studies, Cultural Studies, Indigenous Studies, History and Canadian Studies.
