Teaching

Many of our courses provide foundational knowledge for aspiring educators, including not only studies in literary history and analysis, but also examinations of the nuts and bolts of effective writing.

Trent’s Emphasis in Teacher Education lists the following English courses as fulfilling the program’s requirement for a credit in Visual or Performing Arts (Elementary Stream):*

  • ENGL 2152Y/2153H Reading Shakespeare for the Classroom and Stage
  • ENGL 3153H The Renaissance Theatre
  • ENGL 3202Y/3203H Theatre and Journalism during the Restoration and Eighteenth Century
  • ENGL 4150Y/4151H Advanced Studies in Shakespeare
  • ENGL 4804Y/4805H Advanced Studies in Modern Drama

The following English courses are also listed as contributing to the requirement for 2.0 credits in Foundational Studies (Elementary and Secondary Streams):*

  • ENGL 2001H Critical Practice
  • ENGL 2703H  Literature and Social Justice
  • ENGL 2804Y/2805H Modern Drama
  • ENGL 2810Y/2811H Children’s Literature
  • ENGL 3100Y From Beowulf to Blogging
  • ENGL 3102Y/3103H Anglo-Saxon England
  • ENGL 3500Y/3501H I Am Canadian
  • ENGL 3504Y/3505H Space and Place in Canadian Literature
  • ENGL 3600Y/3601H Theory and Criticism
  • ENGL 3700Y/3701H Writing the Body
  • ENGL 3850Y/3801H Creative Writing
  • ENGL 4850Y/4851H Creative Writing

*Always consult Trent's School of Education and Professional Learning for up-to-date lists of teachable in Trent's education program.

Important: As you decide what English courses to take, check the requirements of the teachers colleges you plan to apply to. Some require a Canadian Literature credit; some count Indigenous Studies as a “teachable” (as do some School Boards) and others do not; some require first year English and others do not.
