Founded in 1978, Cultural Studies at Trent was the first department of its kind in North America and today occupies an original and leading position in the field. Unlike at other universities where Cultural Studies is mixed in with teaching of English, Communications, Trent's Department is an autonomous unit, indeed one of the university's largest.

Featuring its very own faculty, courses, and pathways, as well as a distinctive academic practice, the Department provides students with an opportunity for a more intensive, integrated, and wide-ranging brand of cultural study than is available at other institutions.
