Trent University is excited to provide youth aged 15 - 30 with an opportunity to develop leadership skills and make a meaningful impact in their community through the new Impact Microgrant Program.
Program participants will complete a micro-credential on leadership and project management. Upon completion of the micro-credential, they will receive a badge to be shared on social media and LinkedIn. And after reaching certain milestones in the micro-credential, participants will receive up to $5000 to make their ideas a reality!

Eligibility:
- Canadian citizens, permanent residents or persons who have received refugee status in Canada
- At least 15 years of age and no older than 30 years of age at the time their microgrant project begins
- Priority given to youth from the following demographics: Indigenous youth, Black and racialized youth, youth with disabilities, 2SLGBTQI+ youth, newcomer youth, youth from an Official Language Minority Community, youth living in rural or remote communities and youth from low- income households.
The Process:
- Apply to the program with an a project idea (this can be in the early stages).
- Complete the Impact Microgrant Micro-Credential (approximately 15 hours of leadership and project management training). The micro-credential will guide you through project planning, budgeting, risk management and assessment.
- Receive up to $5,000 of grant funding to implement the project and assess its success.
- Attend an Impact Microgrant Program End-of-Year Celebration (February 25th, 2026) where your project will be showcased.
Note: To be eligible for the microgrant, participants must complete the Impact Microgrant Micro-Credential.
Important Dates:
The Impact Microgrant Program will be funded until March 31, 2027. Intake will be on a rolling basis, with two main intake periods each year (spring and fall)

What are the learning outcomes?
Upon completion of the Impact Microgrant Program, participants will:
1) Understand the relationship between leadership, social change and project implementation;
2) Know how to plan, execute, monitor and close a project effectively;
3) Have hands-on experience with key project management concepts, including project outlines, budgets, risk management and evaluation.
Do I need to have prior experience in leadership or project management?
The Impact Microgrant Program will support participants to develop leadership and project management skills; applicants are not required to have prior experience. Applicants should be interested in skill development and enthusiastic about engaging in positive social change.
What are the next steps?
1) Review eligibility and program requirements. Email a Program Coordinator if you have any questions; they will be happy to set up a meeting with you.
2) Review the application and apply for the program.
3) After acceptance to the program, work through the online micro-credential and complete the required assignments. Certain assignments, including a project plan, a budget, and a risk management plan, must be approved by the Program Coordinators before your grant is issued.
4) Communicate with your Program Coordinator and community or campus partners as needed.
5) Receive your Impact Microgrant funding and run your project.
6) Evaluate the project's success and complete the remaining modules of the micro-credential. This will include submitting your receipts/invoices to confirm completion of your project and completing a final reflection for the program.
7) Attend an in-person end-of-year celebration where your project and end results will be featured at the event.
What is the time commitment for the program?
This will vary greatly depending on the size of the project, number of community or campus partners, and your previous experience. However, you can expect completion of the Impact Microgrant Program to be equivalent to that of an academic course
- Application: 0.5 hours
- Meeting with a Program Coordinator (optional): 1.0 hours
- Micro-credential Course Completion & Project Development: 15 hours + assignment time
- Running & Evaluating Project: Varies depending on project
- Celebrate your project at End-of-Year Event: 2 hours
How can the grant funding be used?
Your individual project plan will be reviewed and approved through the assignments that you will submit in the micro-credential.
Eligible microgrant projects:
- Must be created and led by youth (aged 15 -30)
- Must not be done on behalf of, or for an organization other than a volunteer-led youth organization or club; and
- Should not be the continuation of an existing program offered by an organization or club
Generally, the funds can be spent on a variety of things including:
- Advertising – paper or social media advertising
- Community outreach
- Food and refreshments for group events
- Payment to presenters or trainers (this can't go to the applicant)
- Equipment
- Project Implementation
- Monitoring or evaluation
Ineligible activities include those that:
- Involve partisan political activity such as supporting a candidate or political party
- Do not respect existing individual human rights in Canada, including the values underlying the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms as well as other rights. These include reproductive rights and the right to be free from discrimination on the basis of sex, religion, race, national or ethnic origin, colour, mental or physical disability, sexual orientation or gender identity or expression
- Are primarily intended to support sponsorship/fundraising events or other forms of financial assistance; and
- Take place outside Canada
Ineligible expenses include, but are not limited to: financial payments for volunteers, international travel costs, gift cards, living expenses and rent not related to domestic travel costs, debts, membership fees, credit card payments, fines, penalties, mortgage payments, primary accommodations of participants, purchase of alcohol or cannabis, depreciation of capital assets, the portion of the cost of any good/services purchased by the participant for which the participant may claim a tax credit or reimbursement
Does the project need to meet any criteria?
Yes. The project should meet one of the following service themes:
- Reconciliation
- Building an inclusive Canada
- Preserving the environment
- Promoting civic and democratic engagement
- Strengthening youth resilience
Other theme ideas will be considered.
What are some examples of projects?
The goal of this program is support youth-led projects so please do not feel limited by these suggestions:
Environmental Cleanup & Education: Organize regular clean-up events in local parks and waterways, coupled with educational workshops on environmental conservation and sustainability.
Cultural Awareness Festival: Host a cultural festival celebrating diversity through food, music, dance, and art, promoting understanding and appreciation of different cultures.
Homeless Care Packages: Assemble and distribute care packages with essential items (e.g., toiletries, snacks, socks) to homeless individuals in your community.
