Crane Work on Bata Catwalk to Reroute Vehicle Traffic August 12

Bus routes, car traffic to be temporarily redirected outside of Bata loop to West Bank Drive as work on catwalk nears completion

Published Friday, August 11, 2025

Restoration of the Bata Catwalk is nearing its final stages. During the week of August 11-15, crews will complete finishing work including drywall repairs, scaffolding removal, general clean-up, and the removal of steel beams.

The beam removal will require crane work on Tuesday, August 12, resulting in a temporary closure of the Bata Library bus loop from approximately 7:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

During this time, buses will enter campus via Woodland Drive, stop along West Bank Drive (southbound) near the Bata Library, and exit at Nassau Mills Road.

To support continued access to parking, the south entrance to the Student Centre and Pay & Display lots will temporarily operate as a two-way roadway.

The campus community is reminded to move with caution around the area, watching for work vehicles and always following directions from any on-site flaggers.

Thank you for your cooperation and understanding.

Catwalk Waterproofing Begins July 31

Odours may be detected from waterproofing product

Published Friday, July 28, 2025

Contractors will be completing waterproofing work on the Bata catwalk starting the morning of Thursday, July 31.

The product being applied has a strong solvent smell. While all work is taking place outside, members of the campus community travelling near the catwalk may notice the odour.

To minimize the impact inside nearby buildings, the air handling units in Bata Library will be on full recycle mode throughout the duration of the work.

Bata Catwalk Restoration Nears Final Stages

Planned work for the catwalk is on track to be completed in August

Published Friday, July 4, 2025

Restoration of the Bata Catwalk is progressing with the recent completion of a concrete pour, and upcoming work that includes the removal of temporary supports, the installation of an expansion joint, and reinstallation of pavers on the north side of the bridge.

The campus community is reminded to move with caution around the area, watching for work vehicles and always following directions from any on-site flaggers. Please also allow extra time for travel, as some detours or access restrictions may occur while moving through the area.

Thank you for your ongoing cooperation.

Detours During First Concrete Pour for Bata Catwalk Restoration

Published Friday, May 30, 2025

As part of the ongoing Bata Catwalk Project, weather permitting, there will be closures around the Bata Library that will impact traffic, including city buses. Please allow for extra time during your trip and expect delays.

Date: Monday, June 2, 2025
Time: 7:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. (approx.)

The first of two scheduled concrete pours will take place during this time. To accommodate this work and ensure site safety:

  • Buses will be diverted from the Bata Loop, bus service through the loop is expected to resume after 2:00 p.m.
  • Access to the Student Centre and Pay & Display lot will remain available.
  • Pedestrian access between the Library and the Bookstore will be modified.
  • To reach Champlain College from the Student Centre or Library, pedestrians must detour:
→ through the Pay & Display lot
→ cross at the stop sign
→ continue along the opposite sidewalk

Signage and blockades will be in place, and workers will be on site to assist and direct as needed.

Thank you for your patience during this phase of the project.

Increased Dust, Noise as Bata Catwalk Construction Work Continues

Contractors chipping concrete and sandblasting areas

Published Monday, April 28, 2025

Over the next two weeks, weather permitting, contractors will continue detailing concrete, chipping and sandblasting in areas. This will lead to an increase in dust and noise outside Bata Library. During this time additional workers and trucks will be present removing construction debris and delivering supplies to continue the next phase of work.

As this continues, we ask everyone crossing through the area to be mindful of the noise, dust, and potential delays. Always follow signs and direction from workers on site, where applicable.

Thank you for your continued patience and cooperation as this important work moves forward.

For more information or questions about the project, please contact Cheryl Schnurr.

Bata Bus Stop Relocated March 22 Due to Crane Operation for Bata Catwalk Restoration

Sidewalk at the bus loop between Champlain College and Bata Library will be closed for the duration of crane operations; access to Bata Library via the ramp and first-floor entrance remains open

Published Friday, March 21, 2025

On Saturday, March 22, from 7:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., a crane will be in operation to support work part of the Bata catwalk restoration project. The crane will be moving equipment and materials overhead, thus traffic in the area will be temporarily rerouted.

During this time, the bus stop outside Bata Library will be temporarily relocated to the nearest stop sign on West Bank Drive near Lady Eaton College. The sidewalk between Champlain College and library will also be closed off during the work.

The campus community and visitors are advised to move with caution around the work site, with additional help from on-site personnel directing pedestrian traffic.

Access to the first floor of Bata Library via the ramp and sliding doors will remain available.

The one-way Bata Loop will be closed to all vehicular traffic.

Visitors to the area on campus may also notice increased noise, dust and construction vehicles as contractors complete the installation of platforms around the catwalk. Land surveyors will be on site collecting data, measuring and mapping the work area.

Repairs and upgrades to the catwalk include a deck replacement to support regular use, which will extend the lifespan of this walkway feature.

Construction Work Begins to Restore Bata Catwalk

Published Monday, February 24, 2025

The raised walkway connecting Champlain College and Bata Library is undergoing essential rehabilitation work to protect the structural integrity of the heritage feature

Trent University is investing in the essential restoration of the Bata catwalk, the raised walkway above the stairs between the Bata bus loop and podium, completing rehabilitation work to protect its structural integrity.

Repairs and upgrades to the catwalk include a deck replacement to support regular use, which will extend the lifespan of this pathway from the podium to Bata Library and meet modern accessibility requirements.

Moving Safely around the Work Site
The campus community and visitors are advised to move with caution around the work site by the bus loop and the upper catwalk level.  Access to Bata Library from the Champlain podium via the catwalk will not be available during the restoration work. Below the catwalk, between the first floor of Bata Library and Champlain College, crews will be maintaining a pathway around the fenced-off work site, including accessible ramps and a small section of stairs up to the Bata podium.

Alternative Accessibility Pathways
Members of the Trent community and campus visitors with accessibility requirements can still access Bata Library through first-floor entrances and take the elevators near Trent Archives to upper floors.

An accessible pathway between Bata Library or the Bata bus loop and the Champlain podium is available via the elevator in Champlain College located near The Ceilie.

Timeline for Completion
The project is expected to take six months to complete, aligning with the best possible weather conditions to conduct the work. It must take place during the spring to be complete ahead of the 2025-26 academic year, and most of this work will take place during the summer academic term when there is less traffic on campus.

Planning for Convocation
All 2025 Convocation ceremonies in Peterborough will be held in person on campus in the Trent Athletics Centre. Planning is underway to ensure this year’s ceremonies are celebratory, enjoyable, and create lasting memories for graduates and guests. Visit trentu.ca/convocation for updates, information, and FAQs about arrangements for 2025 Convocation ceremonies.

Rehabilitation Work on the Bata Catwalk Begins February 18

Contractors are on site during Reading Week to set up and enclose the work area, including the area below the catwalk near the Bata bus loop
Published Thursday, February 13, 2025

Important restoration work to extend the life and preserve the heritage of the Bata catwalk begins February 18.

Contractors will be on site during Reading Week putting up fencing around the work area located between Bata Library and Champlain College, as well as shoring and scaffolding.

The Bata catwalk and vestibule leading to the second floor of the library will be closed for the duration of this work. Pathways will also be limited below the catwalk (at the bus loop), however a pathway and ramp will be available and maintained near the area and the bus stop will remain open.

The ground-level doors to both Bata Library and Champlain College by the bookstore will remain accessible, as will access to the elevators in both buildings. A barrier-free route between the east and west banks is through elevators inside Champlain College near The Ceilie. For after-hours elevator access, a new Trent Card reader has been installed at the Champlain College doors.

All campus visitors are asked to take extra care while traveling through this area.

Updates and information about this important architectural preservation project will be shared on MyTrent.

For more information or questions about the project, please contact Cheryl Schnurr.
