As part of Trent University’s commitment to maintaining a safe and accessible campus, the Bata catwalk rehabilitation in 2025 was essential work that is protecting the structural integrity of a designated heritage feature of Trent University’s Symons Campus.
Designed by Ron Thom, the Canadian architect behind Trent’s iconic mid-century modern campus, the Bata catwalk is an original part of Trent University’s design and considered a heritage asset. Thom’s designs emphasize the interplay of built and natural environments, with raw concrete, elevated walkways, and multi-level connections. His philosophy was to offer functionality while preserving sightlines to the river and surrounding environment.
As a priority heritage asset, the project has been reviewed and approved under Trent’s Heritage Stewardship Policy to preserve its historical and cultural significance to Trent’s campus landscape.
Completed work includes a deck replacement, structural maintenance, and critical upgrades necessary to extend the lifespan of this primary pedestrian walkway connecting Bata Library and Champlain College.
