Allan Marshall Pool FAQs

Who Can Swim at the Allan Marshall Pool?

The Allan Marshall Pool is open to Trent students and community members during scheduled lane swims, open swims, and aquafit classes.

Non-members are welcome too! You can purchase a day pass to access the pool and other Athletics Centre amenities. Click here for day pass rates.

Admission Standards & Swim Test Requirements

To keep everyone safe and confident in the water, we follow age-based admission standards and a Swim Test protocol:

Children Ages 6 and Under

  • Must be accompanied in the pool by a parent/guardian who is at least 16 years of age.
  • The adult must remain within arm's reach at all times.
  • Maximum two children per parent/guardian.

Children Ages 7 to 9

  • May attempt the Swim Test to demonstrate comfort and ability in the water.
    • If successful, they may swim independently, but a parent/guardian must remain on the pool deck.
    • If unsuccessful, they must be accompanied in the pool by a parent/guardian (16+) who remains within arm's reach.
  • Maximum four children per parent/guardian.

Children Ages 10 to 12

  • May swim independently, but must be accompanied by a parent/guardian (16+) who remains on the pool deck.

Swim Test Requirements

To access the deep end during Open Swims, swimmers must successfully complete the Swim Test. Each swimmer may attempt the test once per swim. If unsuccessful, they’re encouraged to practice and try again another day.

The Swim Test includes:

  1. A foot-first jump into the deep end with a safe recovery to the surface.
  2. One minute of treading water in the deep end.
  3. A 25-metre unassisted front swim to the shallow end wall—continuous and without stopping or touching the bottom.

Note: Lifeguards may stop a Swim Test at any time if a swimmer shows signs of fatigue or weakness.

Wristband Policy

To help lifeguards and staff identify swimmers' abilities, wristbands are issued based on Swim Test results:

  • Red Band: Did not attempt or complete the Swim Test. Must wear a life jacket and be supervised in the water by an adult within arm’s reach.
  • Yellow Band: Did not complete the Swim Test but may swim in the shallow end. Supervision required in the water; life jackets are optional.
  • Green Band: Successfully completed the Swim Test. May swim independently in all pool areas, including the deep end.

Public Health & Safety Requirements

To maintain a clean and safe environment for all:

  • No one with a communicable disease or open sores may enter the pool.
  • Glass containers are not permitted on the pool deck or in the pool.
  • Polluting the water (e.g., spitting, blowing nose, etc.) is strictly prohibited.
  • Boisterous play in or around the pool is not allowed.
  • The pool and deck can accommodate a maximum of 263 bathers.
  • Spectators (parents/guardians) must remain 1.80 metres from the pool edge at all times.
  • All bathers must shower with warm water and soap before entering or re-entering the pool deck.
  • An emergency phone is located at the south end of the pool deck.
