Swimming Lessons

Spring 2026 Registration opens on April 1st at 7am!

Learn to Swim at the Trent Athletics Centre!

Make a splash with our swimming lessons for all ages!

The Athletics Centre follows the Lifesaving Society’s Swim for Life Program which focuses on basic survival skills and proper swimming technique. The modules are designed so that they flow together seamlessly (see Updated Swim Level Pathway).

Swimmers start by developing a strong foundation and personal self-rescue skills, then continue to develop stronger swimming skills. There is something for everyone in this program.

New for Spring 2026

Two new levels have been added to the Swim for Life program for Spring 2026 to better support swimmers based on their age, skill level, and comfort in the water. These additions, Swimmer Fundamentals and Patrol Fundamentals, create a more gradual learning pathway by breaking skills into smaller steps. This approach helps swimmers build confidence as they progress through our pathway.

NEW: Swimmer Fundamentals

Start your Swim for Life journey with this introductory level designed for beginner swimmers or those transitioning from Preschool to Swimmer levels. Swimmer Fundamentals focuses on building water confidence while developing the essential skills needed for future progression.

Participants will practice opening their eyes underwater, breathing control through exhaling and breath-holding, and performing floats, glides, and kicking on both their front and back without assistance.

NEW: Patrol Fundamentals

This level helps swimmers improve strength, endurance, and overall efficiency in the water, and is intended for swimmers transitioning into the Canadian Swim Patrol program. Participants will work on stroke development through drills, interval training, and endurance activities.

Prerequisites: Swimmer 6

Commitment to Quality

Trent Athletics is committed to providing high quality aquatics programs that are a positive experience for all swimmers. Our lessons are an 8 - 12 class program, with 30 minute, 45 minute and 60 minute classes.

Swim Levels

To register for swim lessons, you need to determine the appropriate swim level. The program descriptions are included on the registration page give details on each swim level and you can contact our Aquatics Centre at aquatics@trentu.ca or 705-748-1432 to connect with one of our Aquatics staff for more information.

If you are joining us from a different facility, you may notice our levels are named differently. Below, you will find a converion chart, so you can know which level your swimmer should start with.
