UPDATE: New legislation comes into effect June 1, 2019:
The use of small, remotely piloted aircraft (commonly known as drones) in Canada is subject to the requirements of the Canadian Aviation Regulations (CARs), especially Part IX – Remotely Piloted Aircraft Systems. The inappropriate use of drones is subject to penalties under the Criminal Code, (Offences against Air or Maritime Safety, Breaking and Entering, and Mischief), the Ontario Trespass to Property Act and laws related to voyeurism and privacy.
Drone pilots are required to carry a valid drone pilot certificate and may only fly drones that are marked and registered. Additional requirements are determined by the size of the drone (less than 250 grams; greater than 250 grams but less than 25 kg; 25 kg or more) and the nature of the operation (basic or advanced). The operation of a drone that weighing more than 25 kg. requires special permission from Transport Canada.
Any person who flies a drone over University property or in relation to a University sanctioned activity is expected to comply with these requirements.
