Summary:
Asbestos has been identified as a health hazard that is linked to several serious, debilitating diseases that often end in death. For each disease, there is a period of latency, usually more than ten years, between first exposure to asbestos and the appearance of the disease.
In order to minimize this health hazard, Trent University has developed a comprehensive Asbestos Management Program (AMP) that aims to control disturbance of asbestos-containing materials during demolition, renovation, alteration, repair or other activities.
The AMP incorporates the following elements:
- Asbestos Assessments and Reassessments (Each Trent University building has its' own Asbestos Assessment, and employees MUST familiarize themselves with the documents that correspond to their work location. These documents can be found in the Physical Resources Department office and on the Trent Health and Safety Portal, which is accessible by all Trent University employees.)
- Regulatory Requirements and Trent Policies
- Roles and Responsibilities
- Notifications
- Training Requirements
- Emergency Reaction and Procedures
- Work Practices (Type 1, 2 and Glove Bag Work)
- Record Keeping
- Contractor Requirements
Any University employee who manages a University building known to contain Asbestos must ensure that all applicable AMP requirements are met.
