Hazardous Plants
Several plants commonly found throughout Ontario can cause skin irritation, burns, or allergic reactions, including:
To reduce exposure:
- Learn to identify hazardous plants.
- Avoid direct contact with unfamiliar vegetation.
- Wear appropriate protective clothing and gloves.
- Wash exposed skin, clothing, and equipment after potential contact.
Ticks, Mosquitoes, and Insect-Borne Diseases
Outdoor workers may encounter ticks and mosquitoes that can carry illnesses such as Lyme disease and West Nile virus. Protect yourself by:
- Wearing long sleeves, long pants, and closed footwear.
- Using insect repellent.
- Avoiding tall grass and dense vegetation where possible.
- Performing a full-body tick check after outdoor work.
- Reporting tick encounters and seeking medical attention if symptoms develop.
Wildlife and Other Outdoor Hazards
Employees may encounter wildlife, rodents, stinging insects, and other pests while working outdoors. Workers should:
- Maintain awareness of their surroundings.
- Avoid disturbing wildlife or nests.
- Wear appropriate protective clothing.
- Report hazards or concerns to their supervisor.
