Hand-Arm Vibration Syndrome (HAVS) is a serious health condition that can be caused by regular, long-term use of vibrating tools and equipment, such as grinders, chainsaws, or jackhammers. Over time, exposure to vibration can damage vasculature, nerves, and muscles in the hands and arms. Symptoms of HAVS may include:
- Tingling, numbness, or pain in the fingers
- Reduced grip strength and loss of dexterity
- "White finger" episodes where circulation is restricted
HAVS affects both comfort and safety at work. Workers may lose fine motor control, making tasks harder and increasing the risk of mistakes or accidents. Managing vibration exposure is a key aspect of ergonomics. Prevention strategies may include:
- Use of low-vibration tools
- Rotating tasks to limit exposure time
- Wearing anti-vibration gloves
- Training workers to recognize early signs and report concerns
A training module on HAVS is available for staff to complete through VIP and should be reviewed by supervisors and any workers that may be exposed to vibration.
