A Trent alum, Angeni Lovelady mentors students through unique role in the First Peoples House of Learning

Angeni Lovelady ’16 is the Two-Spirit program coordinator in the First Peoples House of Learning (FPHL), a role dedicated to offering programming, supports, and mentorship for Two-Spirit students at Trent.

“Two-Spirit is an umbrella word to describe those many experiences from an indigenous worldview and encompassing those Indigenous roles in communities,” Angeni said. “It can cover sexuality, it can cover gender, it can cover gender roles, or it can just cover expression.”

As the project coordinator, Angeni develops programming to support students as well as educate the Trent community about the term Two-Spirit to promote understanding and inclusion within and outside of the classroom. They said it has been a powerful experience to engage with currents students, while also building connections for future students.

“Being able to offer support to students is incredibly powerful, it's very healing for myself too, but it also means that I get to build connections with other resources that exist in Canada, in Ontario, and even in our community here in Peterborough. We get to build those connections and build a foundation for further support in the future.”
