As women continue to move into leadership positions within government and public administration, they often face unusual challenges and dilemmas. This course explains some of the challenges women leaders face in public service. Further, it engages strategies and behaviours to employ toward enabling women leaders to lead successfully.
Course Objectives:
- Empower women to see themselves in leadership roles.
- Challenge assumptions and limiting mindsets.
- Develop good habits to support these goals.
- Identifying different types of leadership styles beyond traditional patriarchy.
- Developing communication skills and processes for stronger governance.
- Understanding accountability and systems to achieve goals.
- Learning effective networking.

Course Learning Objectives:
By the end of the course students will:
- build confidence so future leaders can stand up for themselves
- challenge assumptions and limiting mindsets.
- demonstrate an understanding and level of skill to chair meetings.
- identify different types of collaboration governance models that decentralize power.
- develop communication skills and processes for stronger governance.
- understand accountability and systems to achieve goals.
- Self-evaluation (at start and end of course), written assignments, presentations, skills at mock meetings, recruitment of a mentor.
Evaluation:
- Self-evaluation in the first and final classes
- Written assignment based on strategy vs tactics
- A presentation on specific readings and topics
- The ability to chair a meeting
- Recruiting an appropriate mentor

There are no formal prerequisites for this course.
Conclusion:
Students will leave this course with an understanding of strategy vs. tactics, enhanced communication skills and confidence to participate more actively in community decision-making. This will arise from a self-evaluation of internal barriers, plus those imposed by societal norms.
