This course provides educators with an opportunity to explore First Nation, Métis and Inuit knowledge and ways of knowing and how to connect this knowledge to the classroom. Throughout the course students will develop an understanding of First Nation, Métis and Inuit traditional teaching, histories, current issues and culture, and how these connect to the curriculum in order to support the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s calls to action. Students will unlearn the misconceptions of historical events and re-learn historical and current realities for the First Peoples of Canada. Topics will include, but are not limited to, Indigenous Culturally Relevant and Responsive Pedagogy, local traditional knowledge and historical and contemporary contributions of Indigenous peoples and their connections to culture. Using the Seven Grandfather teachings and Medicine Wheel teachings as a framework, candidates will explore traditional teachings, histories, current issues and cultures of First Nations, Métis and Inuit Peoples. This course will provide candidates with the knowledge to create curriculum embedded with Indigenous knowledge and ways of knowing. |

French as a Second Language Part 1 - EDAQ A3071E

FSL focuses on the practice and theory underpinning French as a Second Language education in today's classroom. This course provides teachers with fundamental knowledge and skills in French as a Second Language education: Core, Extended and Immersion. The underlying purpose of this course is to develop an awareness and understanding of classroom theory and practice in French as a Second Language. It provides teachers with an opportunity to combine their knowledge of the French language and culture with their understanding of child development, especially language development, in order to plan and deliver effective and motivating FSL programs. This course is not a language course, but a methodology course. This means that your professional knowledge, in this case, French language fluency, is considered préaquis and is not the focus of the course. Course is delivered completely in French. One oral Skype/Zoom session is required during the course and you must receive a grade of 70 in the oral session in order to pass FSL Part 1. Participants who do not demonstrate proficiency in French throughout the course will not be recommended to OCT. |

FSL Part 2 promotes teacher learning through meaningful experiences and discoveries aimed at expanding and refining the knowledge and skills for the instruction of French as a Second Language within an engaging and sharing community. With the sole focus of advancing their knowledge of teaching French, course participants will collaborate together and learn from one another as they explore the content delivered in this course. As one of Canada’s two official languages, French holds an important status in elementary and secondary education in Ontario. French as a Second Language Part 2 expands on the knowledge and skills acquired in Part 1 and offers educators the opportunity to further their French language experiences. French as a Second Language Part 2 further develops theories and practices of second language acquisition and provides an advanced examination of additional French language instruction strategies to teachers who wish to deepen their ability to develop FSL programs. Taking the Junior Division ABQ course will qualify a teacher to teach grades 4 to 6. Research in education, concerning the junior grades, continues to progress and evolve. The needs of 21st century learners are embedded throughout the Ontario curriculum documents and play a prominent role in our instructional practice in every subject area. Teachers completing this course will have the opportunity to discover the components of an effective junior classroom, with a thorough understanding of how to approach instruction with grade 4 to 6 students in a constantly changing learning environment. Participants will have the opportunity to study current educational research and strategies which support student achievement. Throughout the course there will be substantial opportunities for participants to develop their own personal understanding of best current practices, as well as to develop their knowledge of the underlying theories and professional skills used by effective educators. By the conclusion of the course, participants will have the necessary tools to competently set up and run an effective program for students in the junior division. This course is designed to help teachers develop the knowledge and skills necessary for effective teaching in the junior division. It provides an overview of the junior learner, and addresses The Ontario Curriculum, Grades 4-6 in a variety of subject areas, and relates resource documents, and current research to instruction with the curriculum. The goal of this course is to make teachers comfortable and confident in their daily practice for junior students. Through participation in current, collaborative, and engaging online modules, teachers will acquire skills and resources to support them in being effective and competent junior educators. |

Intermediate English ABQ gives teachers the qualifications to teach in the Intermediate Division (grades 7 to 10). The qualification give a teacher a teachable in English. The course provides teachers with the opportunity to deepen their knowledge and understanding of the foundations of English instruction and literacy practices at the Intermediate level. Participants will have the opportunity to examine the elements of a balanced language program, and will be able to implement a successful program by developing a deeper understanding of the components required. This will be achieved through an exploration of a wide range approaches, theoretical and practical, taken from the course text and the Ontario Ministry of Education. With a focus on young adolescents’ reading and writing processes, the course explores literacy as an active construction of knowledge and the conventions associated with that. They will gain an understanding of balanced literacy and, in a culminating task, apply and synthesize their learning in an integrated unit plan. Finally, they will develop an appreciation of the importance of literacy in students’ lives as active social citizens and will further develop their ability to program for all students. |
