Beth Torrens
Assistant Professor, Sociology

B.A. (Western University), M.A. (Western University), Ph.D. (Western University)

Otonabee College 223, ext. 7822, elizabethtorrens@trentu.ca

Classes I teach at Trent:

  • SOCI 1002 – Introduction to Sociology II
  • SOCI 2610 – Deviance & Social Control
  • SOCI 2615 – Crime and Society
  • SOCI 3601 – Critical Criminology
  • SOCI 4270 – Sociology of Law
  • CRIM 4951 - International Comparative Criminology

My research interest include:

Gender and sexuality; bullying; education; social control and deviance; education; program and policy evaluation

Research translates into teaching:

My research interests highlight the ways that socialization occurs through various social institutions and enforces certain notions of ‘normal’ and ‘deviant’ identities and behaviours. This then relates to the social control and regulation of different populations through formal mechanisms such as criminalization or through informal interactions like bullying. My policy evaluation background also helps me illustrate to students the importance of considering how formal programs and interventions may operate very differently when put into practice and have varied intended or unintended consequences.
