Classes I teach at Trent:

  • SOCI 1002H - Introduction to Sociology II
  • SOCI 3160H - Data Analysis

My research interests include:

My research interests include homelessness, health care, public health, policy, and service provision.

How does your research translate into your teaching, both through courses and supervision?
Sociology and Criminology both involve the study of humans, societies, structures, and interactions. To effectively teach in these fields, the instructor needs to make connections between the course materials and what is happening in the world beyond the classroom. I bring examples and key learnings from my research into every class I teach. Some of the courses are directly related, such as “Sociological Perspectives on Homelessness” and some are more broadly applied, such as “Introduction to Sociology II.” The key to translating research into teaching is being able to tell a story about your findings in a way that students can related to and remember after the class is complete.

My current or recent projects include:

Currently I am working with a team of researchers across Canada to study the impact of COVID- 19 on homelessness sector agencies in rural and remote communities. This follows from a previous study of how H1N1 impacted homelessness sectors in 2009-2010.

Five publications that exemplify my work:

  1. Schiff, R., Buccieri, K., Waegemakers Schiff, J., Kauppi, C., & Riva, M. (2020). COVID-19 and pandemic planning in the context of rural and remote homelessness. Canadian Journal of Public Health, 111, 967-970. Open-access
  2. Buccieri, K., Oudshoorn, A., Waegemakers Schiff, J., Pauly, B., Schiff, R., & Gaetz, S. (2020). Quality of life and mental wellness: A gendered analysis of persons experiencing homelessness in Canada. Community Mental Health Journal, 56(8), 1496-1503. Open- access
  3. Gilmer, C., & Buccieri, K. (2020). Homeless patients associated clinician bias with sub- optimal care for mental illness, addictions, and chronic pain. Journal of Primary Care & Community Health, special collection on how socioeconomic status affects patient perceptions of health care (11), 1-7. Open-access
  4. Buccieri, K., Oudshoorn, A., Frederick, T., Schiff, R., Abramovich, A., Gaetz, S., & Forchuk,C. (2019). Hospital discharge planning for Canadians experiencing homelessness. Housing, Care and Support, 22(1), 4-14. Open-access
  5. Buccieri, K., & Schiff, R. (Eds.). (2016). Pandemic preparedness and homelessness: Lessons from H1N1 in Canada. Toronto, ON: Canadian Observatory on Homelessness. Open-access

What achievements and/or contributions in research are you most proud of?

I am a community-based researcher who works closely with local communities to help find solutions to homelessness. I am proud of the tangible impact this research has had and of the opportunities to engage students in this research in a meaningful way.
