International students that attend university and live in Ontario must have primary health insurance to pay the cost of health care services and medical treatments.
The University Health Insurance Plan (UHIP) is mandatory for all international non-residents studying at a participating university or affiliated college in Ontario.
UHIP provides coverage to eligible members and their dependents (spouse and children) for health services, such as visits to physicians, hospitals, diagnostic testing (e.g. X-ray, blood test), medical emergencies, and transportation via ambulance within Ontario.
UHIP benefits are insured by Manulife and administered by Cowan Insurance Ltd. For UHIP coverage details, fees and claim process, please visit uhip.ca.

Registration
UHIP coverage must be renewed on September 1 every year, and benefit coverage expires on August 31 the following year.
Students are automatically enrolled in UHIP in September after they have registered for courses in the fall term. Students that start in the winter term must manually enroll in January, and students that start in the summer term must manually enroll in May.
Students who are taking an Authorized Leave of Absence and will be out of Canada for the duration of the term, please submit flight details to uhip@trentu.ca prior to the financial drop deadline.
Students who are nearing the end of their program of study may be eligible for an additional six-month extension of UHIP coverage for emergency purposes. You must email uhip@trentu.ca before you finish your courses to be eligible for an extension.
- The extension fee is the same as the regular UHIP fee: $66 per person per month. This fee will be charged to your Trent student account once confirmed with the UHIP Administrator.
- Your dependents' UHIP coverage can be extended as well.
- Coverage provided by Cowan Insurance Ltd. for the UHIP graduate extension is for emergencies only, therefore prescheduled doctor's appointments may not be covered.
Dependents must be included in the student/employee’s UHIP plan to be eligible for coverage. It is the student/employee’s responsibility to register their dependents by requesting the UHIP Dependent Application from uhip@trentu.ca.
Employees are registered during their onboarding at the new employee information meeting.
