The Health & Safety team is looking for additional staff volunteers to serve as Fire Wardens across all buildings and campuses. There is especially a need for more wardens in the Environmental Sciences Building and Science Complex.
Fire Wardens play an essential role in helping to ensure the safety of building occupants. Becoming a Fire Warden involves minimal time commitment: an onboarding training session (~45 minutes-1 hour) and participation in periodic drills and emergency evacuations when required.
What does a Fire Warden do?
- Assists with building evacuations during fire alarms and emergency situations.
- Encourages occupants in their area to leave the building and directs them to the appropriate exits and assembly areas.
- Ensures occupants gather away the building and roadways, and do not re-enter buildings until an all-clear is given.
- Fire Wardens do not place themselves at risk, remain in buildings longer than anyone else, or perform any sort of rescue or fire-fighting operations.
Why become a Fire Warden?
- Help contribute to the safety of the Trent community, including staff, students, and visitors.
- Ensure improved Fire Warden coverage throughout our buildings.
- Assist with safe and orderly evacuations in buildings that can be large and complex.
If you are interested in becoming a Fire Warden or have any questions, please contact healthandsafety@trentu.ca. Any staff can be a Fire Warden, regardless of job or schedule. Training dates and more information will be shared in coming weeks.
