It is important to review your student account regularly, especially after registration changes. In addition to term fees due at the beginning of the term, other fees and late payment fees may be posted to your account throughout the year.
Students must plan their registration activity carefully. It is the student's responsibility to be familiar with the Graduate Academic Calendar for financial and academic matters and penalties.
Some professional programs require the payment of a $2,500 deposit. Please carefully review your offer letter to determine if your program requires a deposit to hold your place in the program. Payment will be applied to your first-term tuition fees.

Graduate Tuition Fee Deadlines
Tuition fees are billed to registered students’ accounts a few weeks before a term begins. Tuition is due each term by the below respective deadlines.

Students registering after payment deadlines will be required to pay their fees upon approved late registration.
A $100 late payment fee will be levied if the payment is not made by any fee deadline date for any term.
Trent University reserves the right to charge interest on unpaid account balances. Daily interest charges will apply to all balances outstanding after the payment due date and will be added on the first day of each month until the outstanding balance is paid in full. Graduate Tuition Fees
Graduate tuition fees vary between research/thesis-based programs and professional programs. For full details on graduate fees for the 2025-26 academic year, please refer to the appropriate fee schedule posted below.
- Graduate Program Length: Refers to the total duration of a specific academic program, which can span multiple academic years.
- Academic Year: At Trent University, the academic year consists of three terms and runs from September 1 to August 31.
- Tuition Fees: Subject to increase each academic year and published on the website each July. Fees are approved by the Trent University Board of Governors and posted by September.
- Billing: Graduate studies fees are billed per term or per course, depending on the program, and are based on the year of entry into the program.
An Important Note for January and May Starters: The estimated tuition amount included in your Letter of Acceptance (box 22) will not include fee increases beginning in September. Please check our website in July to view your Fall tuition.

Health & Dental Plan and Relief Fund
Peterborough and Durham graduate students are automatically enrolled in and billed for the Health & Dental Plan in their first term of the academic year.
Students with alternative health coverage through an employer or parents can opt-out of the Plan. All opt-outs must be done online on the Trent Student VIP benefits website during the first term of the student's academic year. Those who opt-out will be reimbursed via e-transfer.
Opt-Out Deadlines:
- September 1 - September 30 (September-start students)
- January 1 - January 31 (January-start students)

Health and Dental Financial Relief Fund
The TCSA offers funding for expenses that plan members may incur that are not covered by the benefits plan or that exceed plan limits. All expenses under the health and dental umbrella will be considered, including counselling, dental emergencies, eye wear, weighted blankets, etc. Assistance can be requested prior to incurring the cost, or retroactively after expenses have been incurred.

Making a Payment
Information on how to make a payment to your student account can be found on the Make a Payment webpage.
Please be advised that Trent University does not send bills or invoices. Once payment has been received, it will be credited to your student account. Your account statement is available online through your myTrent portal. Students can access their Statement of Account under myTrent > Finances > My Account > Account Statement. Your account will be updated within 3-5 business days from our receipt of your payment.
For out of country payments, the University’s preferred method for the receipt of fee payment from outside of the country is TransferMate.

Payment Plans
Payment Plans are a type of financial arrangement that will allow students to make periodic payments towards tuition fees. This opportunity provides a convenient way to pay fees with more management payments. Graduate students can apply for a payment plan at the beginning of each term (September, January, and May).

Living Expenses
It is essential as a graduate student that you have sufficient funds to support yourself over the duration of your studies. Current annual costs for a graduate student living away from home including living expenses and books are estimated at $20,000 - $25,000 per year. Additional costs may be incurred depending on factors such as lifestyle and the number of family members being supported (if applicable).
In addition to living expenses, students are required to pay tuition fees for each term of enrollment. Fee information for each program can be found under the "Graduate Tuition Fees" tab above.

Ontario Student Assistance Program (OSAP)
The Ontario Student Assistance Program, or OSAP, is a financial aid program from the provincial government. Students with Ontario residency are eligible to apply.
Eligible students at the graduate level can apply for OSAP funding on a term-by-term basis. OSAP is assessed each term based off your applications.

Out of Province Loans
Students studying at Trent who are from outside of Ontario are not eligible for OSAP but may be eligible for funding through their home province or territory. To find the program for your home province or territory, you can visit the Government of Canada website.
Identifying a Financial Scam
A scam occurs when someone pretending to be an authority figure, such as an employer, property owner, or university official, steals your money or personal information.
Scams tend to increase at the beginning of new terms and scammers tend to target international students who are new to Canada. All students are encouraged to familiarize themselves with strategies to avoid scams.
Common Scams
Scammers may contact you by text message, phone call, and/or email. Students may be sent scams related to:
- Tax and personal information
- Housing
- Employment
- Scholarships
Students can browse the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre's online scam repository to better understand what types of scams they may see.
Avoiding Scams
Please consider the following tips to help you avoid common scams:
- Trent University will only ever post fees to your account through the account statement feature in the myTrent portal. Email graduatefinance@trentu.ca if you have questions about your account statement.
- Official communications from Trent University are always sent from @trentu.ca email addresses. Always verify the senders of emails you receive. Scam emails will often be accompanied by an undertone of urgency (e.g. "do this or your account will be terminated"). Some common traits of malicious emails include, but are not limited to:
- Unexpected prompts to click a link
- Requests to enter your credentials
- Requests to download an attachment
- Requests to send money
- Trent University will never ask you to pay through PayPal, gift cards, or bitcoin.
- Employers will never ask you to pay them to begin work or to transfer funds on their behalf.
- No Canadian Government Agency will call you to request payment or threaten to arrest or deport you if you not comply. If you receive a threatening phone call, hang up immediately.
