Traditions

As one of Trent University’s youngest colleges, Gzowski College likes to encourage new ideas and stay flexible, while also hosting some traditional annual programming designed to connect current students to each other and to our staff and faculty.

Enwayaang

Description

Enwayaang Talks and Guest Lectures

Enwayaang is the Anishinaabemowin word for "the way we speak together.”

Each year, Gzowski invites engaging guests to "speak together" with us about their passions, their interests and their ideas.  Details are posted on the Trent University portal (myTrent) and on Instagram @gzowskicollege

Tipi Times

Description

with FPHL Firekeepers

The FPHL Traditional Area is is located just south of the Enwayaang building at Trent University's Peterborough Campus. Known as Mnidoowag A'Kiing (The Spirit Lands) in the Michi Saagiig dialect of Anishinaabemowin, it is comprised of a Tipi, Wigwam, Medicine Garden, and Sweat Lodge.

FPHL hosts Social Fires each week for all students. For those who love the smell and sound of the crackling fire, this is a great opportunity to get acquainted with the space, or to visit a tipi for the first time.

Furry Therapy

Description

Ducks, Chicks, and Puppies

We are known as the "animal college." Our aim is to offer students the opportunity of finding time to unwind, breathe fresh air and connect with the present.

The College organizes lots of animal cuddling - ranging from doggy therapy events to puppy yoga classes, to fostering duckling and baby chick visits in spring.

All theses experiences are great stress relievers and help students make friends and engage with faculty and staff members.

Community Lunches

Description

Students, Staff & Faculty Meetups over Food

Gzowski College hosts community lunches for students, staff and faculty. Our most popular lunch is the Three Sisters Community Lunch on September 30, on the National Day of Truth and Reconciliation.  Our office is a welcoming spot to grab a snack, and the kitchen (ENW 345) is bookable if you want to do your own cooking or baking.

Our food events are free for students! Dates and details will be posted on the Trent Calendar and through our social media.

Title
Pow Wow

Description

Start of the School Year Celebration

Pow Wow means gathering or celebration. For Anishinaabeg peoples, traditionally, a Pow Wow was an annual event held after the winter snows had melted. It was a time to celebrate the renewal of life, renew old friendships and form new ones. It was an opportunity to hold naming ceremonies and other traditional honouring ceremonies.
Pow Wows are still an important part of Indigenous communities.  Gzowski College coordinates, with support from all colleges, a trip to the annual Curve Lake Pow Wow every fall. The Trent University Native Association also hosts a student-run Pow Wow on campus every spring. Attending a Pow Wow is a great way to learn more about Anishinaabeg culture and to immerse yourself in an incredible experience.

Baking Competitions

Description

Apple Week & Pi Day

Always eager to enjoy the simple things in life, Gzowski students love baking - and eating!

The start of the school year is marked by crisp days and the apple harvest. We celebrate with a fall apple baking contest - you can compete, or just eat, with us.

On March 14, Gzowski College and the Department of Mathematics celebrate the mathematical constant Pi (3.14159...) with a creative pie baking competition.

These events build community in a fun and relaxed way. Join us to compete, to vote, or just to enjoy a meal together.

Outdoor Adventures

Description

Try something new - and get outside.

Cross country ski trips. Lunchtime walks, no matter the season. East Bank snowshoeing and West Bank hiking. Strawberry socials at the tipi. Plant your plant workshops. Sunset soirees. Movie nights. Join us as we partner with other groups on campus, such as Trent International, the Colleges, Gzowski Cabinet, and the First Peoples House of Learning to provide diverse and engaging experiences - many of them outside! If you want to find out more, come to the Gzowski College office or check the Trent events calendar and the student experience portal regularly.  Our Instagram account @gzowskicollege is also a great way to find out what's happening.

Fall and Winter: Let's Celebrate!

At our Fall Awards reception, we recognize and celebrate all students who achieved 80% or higher on the previous fall/winter term. In Spring, our Awards Ceremony recognizes high achieving students across a variety of categories, with funded prizes - all followed by a reception for graduating students.

Did you complete a Collegiate Certificate or a Micro-credential with us? You will also be recognized at one of our annual ceremonies.
