Grant Writing

Grant Writing for Nonprofits is a practical course designed to equip participants with the skills and knowledge necessary to craft compelling grant proposals and secure funding for projects and initiatives. Through a series of interactive modules, participants will learn the fundamentals of grant writing, including identifying funding opportunities, developing persuasive proposals, and managing grants effectively. This course aims to enhance participants' ability to write successful grant applications and build strong relationships with funders.

Course Objectives:

  • To provide participants with a comprehensive understanding of the grant writing process and its key components.
  • To equip participants with practical skills to identify and approach potential funders.
  • To empower participants to develop persuasive and well-structured grant proposals that align with funder priorities.
  • To enable participants to effectively manage and report on grants to ensure compliance and accountability.

Lessons:

1. Understanding the Grant Writing Process & its Critical Elements

  • Overview of the grant writing lifecycle
  • Key components of a successful grant proposal
  • Researching and selecting appropriate funding opportunities
  • Proposal development and submission best practices

2. Identifying & Evaluating Potential Funding Sources

  • Types of funding sources (government grants, foundation grants, corporate sponsorships, etc.)
  • Analyzing funder priorities and requirements
  • Aligning organizational needs with funder interest
  • Developing a targeted funding strategy

3. Developing Clear, Compelling & Persuasive Grant Proposals

  • Crafting a compelling narrative and problem statement
  • Outlining project goals, objectives, and outcomes
  • Creating a detailed project budget and justification
  • Writing and editing techniques to enhance proposal effectiveness

4. Implementing Strategies for Managing Grant-Funded Projects

  • Ensuring compliance with funder guidelines and requirements
  • Monitoring and reporting on project progress and outcomes
  • Evaluating project success and impact

Evaluation:

This course is a graded course where a complete or incomplete grade will be issued. To receive a Completion of this course, a student must:

  • Participate in online discussions.
  • Complete lesson quizzes, reflections, or case studies.

  • January 5 - January 28, 2026 (must be completed within 4 weeks)
  • March 2- March 28, 2026 (must be completed within 4 weeks)
  • November 2 - November 28, 2026 (must be completed within 4 weeks)
  • March 1 - March 28, 2027 (must be completed within 4 weeks)

All the courses are delivered online and asynchronously to enable participants to complete the work in their own time. 

How to Register:

Courses are competitively priced, and registrants may qualify for OSAP or the Canada Ontario Job Grant, which offers support for employers.

The fee for the micro-credential is $375, with no additional fees for textbooks or materials.

Prerequisites:

There are no formal prerequisites for this course, although a basic understanding of nonprofit management and fundraising concepts would be beneficial.
