Teaching and Learning Annual Report 2024

2025 Faculty Excellence in Teaching Award Recipients

The Trent university-wide teaching awards program received over 300 nominations for over 100 faulty members and instructors this year. Award recipients will be recognized at the Celebration of Faculty Excellence in Teaching and Research on April 30, from 12-2pm in the Student Centre.    

 

 

Symons Award for Excellence in Teaching  

Recognizes faculty and staff members who encourage learning and who offer unique experiences to their students, challenge them to do their best work, and inspire them to learn.  

David Riegert

David Riegert, Mathematics and Statistics  

The Symons Award for Excellence in Teaching is being awarded to David Riegert, a Lecturer in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics. David Riegert is recognized for his innovative teaching methods and his ability to foster dynamic and inclusive learning environments. He goes above and beyond to make himself available to his students and provide them with exceptional support. David Riegert inspires and challenges students to reach their full potential and his passion for teaching is evident in all aspects of his work.   

 

 

Award for Educational Leadership and Innovation  

Recognizes faculty and staff who have distinguished themselves through their educational leadership, teaching, innovation, and successful communication.  

Joanna Freeland

Dr. Joanna Freeland, Biology  

The Award for Educational Leadership and Innovation is being awarded to Dr. Joanna Freeland, a Professor in the Department of Biology. Dr. Freeland is recognized for her outstanding leadership and innovation at the course, departmental, and institutional level. She has reimagined biology course offerings, established new degree streams, and altered course requirements to build more equitable and effective learning pathways. Dr. Freeland's dedication to service, cross-disciplinary collaboration and curricular innovation have made a profound impact on Trent University. 

 

 

Award for Excellence in Online Teaching  

Recognizes instructors who have demonstrated a passion for, and commitment to, online teaching and who have implemented effective approaches to fostering active learning and student involvement. 

George Kovacs

Dr. George Kovacs, Ancient Greek and Roman Studies 

The Award for Excellence in Online Teaching is being awarded to Dr. George Kovacs, an Associate Professor in the Department of Ancient Greek and Roman Studies. Dr. Kovacs is celebrated for his innovative and creative approach to online teaching. In his course, Origins of Modern Terminology, he has implemented a "choose your own adventure" design, motivating students to direct their own learning. His dedication to creating dynamic and engaging online learning environments has significantly contributed to students’ success. 

 

 

CUPE 3908-1 Award for Excellence in Teaching  

Recognizes contract faculty who have a strong, positive impact on students’ learning. 

Paul Mazzocchi

Dr. Paul Mazzocchi, Political Studies 

The CUPE 3908-1 Award for Excellence in Teaching is being awarded to Dr. Paul Mazzocchi, who was a sessional faculty member in the Department of Political Studies. Dr. Paul Mazzocchi is celebrated for his exceptional ability to push students' understanding and critical thinking to new levels. His engaging teaching style, characterized by thought-provoking questions and dynamic class discussions, has positively impacted student learning.   

 

 

Award for Excellence in Teaching Assistance  

Recognizes teaching assistants who excel at encouraging learning in workshop, tutorial, seminar, laboratory, or field settings.  

Mark Trumble

Mark Trumble, Mathematics and Statistics

The Award for Excellence in Teaching Assistance is being awarded to Mark Trumble, a teaching assistant in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics. Mark Trumble is honored for his exceptional dedication as a teaching assistant. His ability to explain complex concepts in simple terms has greatly enhanced students’ learning. Mark's approachable teaching style and willingness to assist students have made him a valued member of the academic community.
