Types & Descriptions

Students are reminded that submitting false or misrepresentative medical certificates or other documentation in support of requests for concessions on academic work or deadlines is considered cheating under the University’s Academic Integrity Policy. Offenses will be dealt with according to procedures set out in the Academic Calendar under Academic Integrity.  


Grade Appeal - Course Work 

  • You are dissatisfied with the grade you received on term work.
  • Familiarize yourself with the appeals policy and deadlines of the department or program involved.
  • Contact the course instructor to discuss your grade.
  • If you are still dissatisfied, contact the Chair of the department or program.

Grade Appeal - Final Mark 

  • Only the following work may be reassessed in appeals of final grades: – term-work not returned to students before the submission of final grades to the Office of the Registrar; and – final examinations.
  • The deadline to submit appeals of final grades is 60 days after the start of the following academic term.
  • Submit a Grade Appeal - Final Mark. This can be found in myTrent under myTrent > Finance > Marketplace > Office of the Registrar.
  • Refer to the Academic Calendar regarding deadlines for filing a Grade Appeal.

Request for Incomplete Standing

  • You are unable to complete your course work by the end of term due to circumstances beyond your control (e.g. medical reasons).
  • Contact your course instructor to work out arrangements for completing course material after the normal deadlines.
  • Final approval for the arrangement is granted by the department Chair.
  • Be prepared to provide appropriate medical or other documentation.
  • The arrangement must be confirmed before final grades are submitted.

Request for Aegrotat Standing

  • You completed all course work but are unable to write the final exam (e.g. medical reasons).
  • Contact your course instructor and the department for approval.
  • Be prepared to provide appropriate medical or other documentation. 

Petition for Course Overload 

  • Review the criteria for Course Overload to determine if you are eligible.
  • If you are not eligible, you have the option of submitting a Petition for Course Overload (PDF).  Complete and submit the Course Overload form to the Office of the Registrar. Your Academic Advisor does not need to review this type of petition.

Petition for Late Add

  • You wish to register in a course after the published deadlines.
  • Complete the Petition for Late Add and submit it to the Office of the Registrar. Your Academic Advisor does not need to review this type of petition.

Petition for Late Withdrawal

  • You missed the deadline for withdrawal from a course but are unable to complete the course work.
  • Complete the full Petition for Late Withdrawal or Course Performance Summary.
  • Make an appointment with your Academic Advisor to review and discuss your petition.

Petition for Academic Suspension

  • You wish to appeal your academic suspension from the University.
  • Complete the Petition of Academic Suspension.
  • The Self-declaration of Extenuating Circumstance form may be submitted in lieu of supporting documentation for Fall/Winter 2020-21 and Winter 2021 course(s) only.
  • Make an appointment with your Academic Advisor to review and discuss your petition.

Petition for Exemption to Letter of Permission Regulations

  • You wish to take a course on a Letter of Permission but do not meet the University regulations.
  • Review the Letter of Permission Criteria.
  • Complete the Petition for Exemption from Letter of Permission Regulations.
  • Make an appointment with your Academic Advisor to review and discuss your petition.

Petition for Exemption to Degree Requirements

  • You are unable to complete the University degree regulations and are therefore ineligible to graduate.
  • Complete the Petition for Exemption from Academic Regulations or Degree Requirements.
  • The Self-declaration of Extenuating Circumstance form may be submitted in lieu of supporting documentation for Fall/Winter 2020-21 and Winter 2021 course(s) only.
  • Make an appointment with your Academic Advisor to review and discuss your petition.

Petition for Exemption to Academic Regulations

  • You wish to appeal an academic regulation.
  • Complete the Petition for Exemption from Academic Regulations or Degree Requirements.
  • The Self-declaration of Extenuating Circumstance form may be submitted in lieu of supporting documentation for Fall/Winter 2020-21 and Winter 2021 course(s) only.
  • Make an appointment with your Academic Advisor to review and discuss your petition.

Petition for Academic Renewal

  • You are not eligible for late withdrawal and would like to replace all grades in a term.
  • Complete the Petition for Academic Renewal.
  • Make an appointment with your Academic Advisor to review and discuss your petition.

Special Appeals 

  • You are dissatisfied with the results of an appeal or petition.
  • Refer to Special Appeals Committee for information.
