TUFA Settlement Ratified by Faculty Association Membership and Trent University’s Board of Governors
Joint Release from TUFA and Trent University
The Trent University Faculty Association (TUFA) and Trent University have jointly announced that the University’s Board of Governors ratified a new collective agreement with TUFA this morning. The agreement was previously ratified by TUFA on the evening of Thursday, November 3, 2016 when a majority of faculty voted in favour of the agreement.
TUFA represents 280 full-time faculty, limited-term appointments and professional librarians at Trent University.
“The TUFA membership is very happy to have successfully negotiated and ratified such a fair and forward-thinking agreement. In particular, our membership was most pleased to improve the working conditions and respect for our members serving on limited-term contracts, and to find constructive ways to continue to build on the strength of Trent’s phenomenal faculty and professional librarians," said Jocelyn Williams, president of TUFA.
“On behalf of the senior administration at Trent, I am very pleased that the collective agreement has been approved by both TUFA and our Board of Governors,” said Dr. Jacqueline Muldoon, provost and vice-president, Academic, Trent University. “This institution has a long history of faculty engagement at the highest level, and I look forward to the world-class teaching and research that will continue to take place within our collaborative learning environment.”
Highlights of the agreement include:
- A three-year term commencing July 1, 2016, to June 30, 2019;
- The creation of teaching intensive positions with permanency, with full academic freedom protections;
- Cost containment strategies to offset costs associated with the pension plan, and a joint agreement to continue working together towards plan sustainability;
- Compensation continuing to be based on a formula driven by the average increases of provincial comparators.
The Board was satisfied that the terms of settlement were consistent with provincial broader public sector directives.
Trent University and TUFA are pleased to have reached a negotiated settlement that will allow the University to continue to deliver on its mission.
