Learning from the Land and Indigenous People

Nicole Bell

Dr. Nicole Bell is an Assistant Professor with the School of Education. She is Anishinaabe - Bear Clan from Kitigan Zibi First Nation and is the founder of an Anishinaabe culture-based school for Indigenous children and youth. Collaboratively with Nicole, Teacher Candidates experience land-based activities in Burleigh Falls and Lovesick Lake to personally develop a connection to the environment and an awareness of the Anishinaabe culture. This alternative placement provides Teacher Candidates with the knowledge, motivation, and skills to facilitate the transmission of an environmental consciousness to their future students. Additional, the placement assists Teacher Candidates in establishing inclusive learning spaces that meet the cultural needs of Indigenous students and the cross-cultural learning needs of non-Indigenous students. These objectives assist Teacher Candidates in implementing The First Nation, Métis, and Inuit Education Policy Framework, and the Acting Today, Shaping Tomorrow: Environmental Education in Ontario Schools Policy Framework.

Challenge the Way You Think

Trent University respectfully acknowledges it is located on the treaty and traditional territory of the Mississauga Anishinaabeg. We offer our gratitude to First Peoples for their care for, and teachings about, our earth and our relations. May we honour those teachings.
