Workflow Timeline

Timings assume full-time degree pacing. It is expected that full-time students complete their program of study within four years. Part-time degree pacing assumes up to double time from these benchmark timelines. Any request for a time limit extension must be made formally to the Program Director and the Dean of Graduate Studies.

The project should be designed at the outset to meet these estimated deadlines:

Year 1

  • Meet with Supervisor (1 week)
  • Form and meet with Supervisory Committee (8-12 months)
  • Begin coursework (12-16 months)

Year 2

  • Complete coursework. Draft and revise Learning Plan (16-20 months)
  • Meet with Supervisory Committee (At least every 6 months with reporting at 12-month intervals)
  • Submit and defend Qualifying Examination Dossier (20-24 months)

Year 3

  • Meet with Supervisory Committee (At least every 6 months with reporting at 12-month intervals)
  • Research and write (24-40 months)

Year 4

  • Dissertation draft to Supervisor (40 months)
  • Dissertation draft to Examining Committee (45 months)
  • Give 30-minute talk on dissertation research - arrange with IDSR Program Office
  • Defend dissertation (47 months)
  • Submit successfully defended version of dissertation to School of Graduate Studies (48 months)
