Blackboard How-To

This document will describe how to complete the process of enrolling in a self-enroll course on the Blackboard learning system.

Please note - Academic courses are not permitted to include self-enroll and will not function with this process. In order to be enrolled in an academic course, the user must formally register in the MyTrent system.

Process

1. Login to Blackboard and select the courses tab from the top menu.

2. In the Course Search box, enter the course you’d like to enroll in. For example: Health and Safety training can be found within the Mandatory Employee Training course.

3. Once the results are displayed, select the down arrow beside the course title. This arrow becomes illuminated when you hover your mouse over the course title.

4. Click the Enroll button

Completion of Health and Safety Training

1. Determine if you are a supervisor or worker

You are a supervisor if you have charge of a workplace or authority over a worker.

It is important to understand that you may be a supervisor even if you don't have that job title. Managers, group leaders and lead hands are normally considered supervisors. If you instruct or oversee the work of others, even occasionally, you are a supervisor.

You are a worker if you perform work or supply services for monetary compensation (i.e. employees and anyone working for the University on a contract of service) or if you are a student completing an unpaid placement for academic credit (i.e. placement students and interns).

Supervisors should complete the "Health and Safety Awareness Training for Supervisors". All other workers should complete the "Health and Safety Awareness Training for Workers". Only one course is required.

2. Take the training on Blackboard

Blackboard is accessible with a Trent email account. Employees (i.e. employee email accounts) have direct access, but students (i.e. student email accounts) must self-enroll.

Login to myTrent, click on "Blackboard Learning System" and then go to the 'Mandatory Employee Training' course.

Complete the following training modules:

a) Health and Safety Awareness Training for Workers (or Supervisors)

b) Workplace Violence and Harassment

c) Health and Safety Orientation for Workers

d) WHMIS 2015*

*Only complete if you are working with hazardous materials.

3. Save and submit your certificates

You are encouraged to keep a copy of your training certificates. You may print your certificates, or save the documents as PDF files.

When you are complete with your health and safety training, give a copy of your training certificates to your supervisor. It is the responsibility of your supervisor to submit the Health and Safety Orientation Form to the Health and Safety Office. Supervisors must inform Health and Safety when an employees training is complete, to ensure that their records are retained in the central training database.

Supervisors please note: if an employee completed the Health and Safety Awareness training on an Academic Department Blackboard site, rather than the Mandatory Employee Training Blackboard site, Health and Safety is unable to view these records and will need confirmation of completion from the supervisor.

For any additional inquiries related to this process please contact it@trentu.ca or healthandsafety@trentu.ca.
