The Trent Advantage
Bridge chemistry and physics through interdisciplinary materials science research, exploring matter from the molecular to macroscopic scales with faculty experts at Trent University and Ontario Tech University.
Explore how chemistry and physics shape the properties and applications of materials through graduate research spanning nanotechnology, electronic materials, surface science, biomaterials, and materials characterization. Offered jointly by Trent University and Ontario Tech University, this program combines fundamental science principles with an independent research project, equipping you with the expertise and professional skills to pursue careers in research and development or future doctoral study.
- Learn from expert faculty mentors at both universities, gaining multidisciplinary perspectives and guidance throughout your research.
- Build project management and technical communication skills as you plan, conduct and present your research.
- Access specialized research environments at Trent, including the Trent Centre for Materials Research and the Trent Centre for Biomaterials Research (TCBR).
World Class Facilities
Trent Centre for Materials Research
Explore materials research through the Trent Centre for Materials Research, which brings together faculty and graduate students in Chemistry and Physics to foster collaboration, research exchange and exposure to experimental and theoretical approaches through seminars and research partnerships.
Program Types
-
Thesis
Complete a two-year research-intensive master’s program combining coursework and a thesis emphasizing either theoretical or experimental research. Work under the guidance of a thesis advisor and a multi-disciplinary team of faculty from Trent University and Ontario Tech University. Eligible master’s students have the opportunity to transfer to the Ph.D. program after one academic year.
Research Areas
Areas of academic research focus and faculty expertise
Materials Science is a broad multi-disciplinary area of science focused on understanding, prediction, and application of the properties of matter. Master's students can pursue research in one of four fields of study:
- Biomaterials
- Materials Chemistry
- Materials Physics
- Theoretical and Computational Materials Science
Career Paths
In Their Own Words
I am a Master's student in the Materials Science program at Trent University, working in the IMRL Laboratory. My research focuses on synthesizing graphite from petroleum coke-derived carbon at moderate temperatures, using potential metals. The outcomes of this research aim to enhance the value of petroleum coke: a byproduct of the oil refining industry, and provide innovative electrode materials for batteries.

Faculty Spotlight
Meet some of Trent's world-class professors and researchers.
Dr. Sanela Martic
Chair and Associate Professor, Forensics
Dr. Martic’s research interests include fundamental electrochemistry and bioanalytical chemistry for materials, biomedical, forensic, and environmental applications.
Dr. Carlo Bradac
Associate Professor, Physics
Dr. Bradac’s research focuses on quantum materials and their applications for optics, photonics, and metrology. His recent work also explores novel statistical and machine learning-based methods that improve measurement speed and accuracy in (quantum) sensing applications ‘afflicted’ by data scarcity, noise and decoherence.
