ESL Levels

Preparation for ESL

Preparations for ESL, or “Prep” is the most basic level of the Trent-ESL program.
Students in Prep arrive with little to no English ability (24 hours a week from September to April).

Prep Courses:

  • Reading Writing Grammar Vocabulary
  • Listening and Speaking
  • English in Action

ESL Levels 1-3

ESL 1-3 consists of three full levels, ESL 1-3 or ESL 1, ESL 2, and ESL 3.
This is where most language is learned: through vocabulary, grammar, listening, speaking, pronunciation, reading, and writing skills areas (24 hours a week from September to April).

ESL 1-3 Courses:

  • Writing  and Grammar
  • Reading and Vocabulary
  • Listening, Speaking, and Pronunciation

Academic English

Academic English consists of two levels – Academic English 1 and Academic English 2 – for final preparation for university study. Academic English 1 and Academic English 2 are each worth one full university credit towards your degree for a total of two credits. Additionally, you can add up to two half credit (.5) university courses to your timetable to further your transition to degree studies.

This means you can graduate from Trent-ESL with three full university credits towards your degree or with up to 60% of your first year of university study complete!

You will focus on research, academic writing, presentation skills, reading, critical thinking and communication.

  • Academic English 1: 24.5 hours a week from September to April
  • Academic English 2: 18.5 hours a week from September to April

Courses:

  • Academic Communication
  • Academic Analysis
  • Grammar Workshop (Academic English 1)
  • University Transition (Academic English 2)
  • Writing Conferences
  • Credit courses can be taken with Academic English 1 and 2 (max of two additional half-credit courses for up to one full undergraduate credit)
