This annual event, sponsored by the Bruce and Carol Hodgins Fund and organized by the Colleges at Trent, is a chance to examine and experience our relationship to the land and each other, with a focus on the study of Canadian, environmental, and Indigenous issues. We celebrate interdisciplinary, experiential learning.
Everyone - faculty, staff, alumni and students - are invited. A special invitation is extended to all international and Indigenous students and scholars, and especially to anyone who has never gone camping or been in a canoe.
We travel to Wanapitei for the beauty and remoteness of its location. The Temagami country is rich in history and home to the Teme-Augama-Anishnabai since time immemorial.
Each day, participants organize into small groups for guided hiking and canoe trips in the immediate region. Expeditions are tailored to suit different skill levels. Instruction in canoeing are offered to those indicating an interest. Each group packs a lunch to eat on the land. Late afternoon and evening programs include lectures, films, readings, music, square dancing, and informal discussion.
Each year, we invite a number of people to share papers and presentations related to the colloquium themes around the land. If you are interested in presenting your work and research, please contact us. We welcome comments and ideas for speakers and activities.
Wanapitei has enjoyed and learned from a close association with the Teme-Augama Anishnabai. Gary Potts once TAA Ogima and the recipient of an Honourary Doctorate from Trent was a great friend to many at Wanapitei including Bruce Hodgins. This 50th anniversary celebration was in honour of the memory of our departed teachers Gary and Bruce.
The shared accommodations are rustic but comfortable. Participants are to bring warm sleeping bags and clothes.
