Trent is advancing research on healthy aging and helping reduce the long waitlist for aged care in Peterborough through the development of a University-integrated seniors’ village, anchored by a 224-bed not-for-profit long-term care home located on Trent lands at the corner of Water Street and Woodland Drive.
Building on Trent’s reputation as a globally recognized age-friendly university and research expertise in the Trent Centre for Aging & Society, the seniors village will advance research into aging and provide in-depth learning opportunities for students in a variety of programs like Nursing, Social Work, Business and Sustainable Agriculture.
The University-integrated Seniors Village will ultimately help foster positive intergenerational learning opportunities and positive aging experiences for older adults. The long-term care home helps address the urgent need for more housing in Peterborough and will be connected to the broader seniors’ village by nature trails and surrounded by 55 acres of mature greenspace.
Trent’s commitment to combining education, research, and real-world experience aims to shape the future of senior living.

Project Status
Trent University selected peopleCare Communities through a competitive process to build and operate the 224-bed long-term care (LTC ) home. Public information sessions were held in 2021 to share environmental studies on the land.
Trent, peopleCare and the Ministry of Long-term Care officially broke ground on the long-term care site in September 2025. Construction is anticipated to take approximately 18-24 months before residences are welcomed to the home.
Trent is currently undertaking a process to select a developer for the remainder of the Seniors Village, which is envisioned to include housing and related services for aging in place.
