The School of Business and the Department of Economics jointly offer a four-year Honours program leading to a BA in Accounting and Economics. The program is for students who are interested in studying economics and pursuing a CPA designation. The program provides students with intensive exposure to accounting concepts and applications, and provides the economic background to enable students to understand financial markets and the macroeconomic business environment.
Students take the core of two degrees. This program covers all courses in accounting required for entry into the CPA's professional education program. Students will not only be prepared for a career as an accountant, they will have a foundation in economic theory and in economic data analytics.
This degree is novel in that it is focused very specifically on numeracy, accounting concepts, economic theory, and financial analytics. The degree allows students to take the full set of accounting courses that would be unavailable for students pursuing an Economics major. It also allows students interested in an accounting program to explore financial markets and financial data analytics in greater detail and depth.
The program has several options for experiential learning. There is a co-op option for students wanting directly related work experience. Students may also pursue an individual placement or internship opportunity. Courses in the program will include access to the Financial Intelligence and Innovation Hub, providing financial market insight and direct experience on the Bloomberg platform and other prominent data sources. In several upper-year courses, students will explore case studies, and will explore and analyze real world data, including firm financial data, financial market data and macroeconomic data.
