Dr. Karla Newman
Research Scientist - ICP Mass Spectrometers
Karla joined the Water Quality Centre, part-time, in February 2010. She brought a wealth of experience to the job having worked for Nu Instruments Ltd. in the UK for 2 years. Her research to date has focused on instrument development in the field of plasma source mass spectrometry, with experience in quadrupole, ion trap and magnetic sector instruments. Recent projects include the development of a method to measure Ag nano-particles. She completed her undergraduate degree, M.Sc. (Chemistry) in 2002 and her Ph.D. (Glow Discharge Mass Spectrometry) in 2005, all at the University of Wales at Swansea.
Dr. Naomi Stock
Senior Research Scientist - Organic Mass Spectrometers
Naomi joined the Water Quality Centre in 2008 and is the principal operator of all organic mass spectrometers and associated liquid- and gas-chromatography instrumentation. Her research focuses on the development of analytical methods, including high-resolution mass spectrometry, for the determination and identification of organic contaminants in environmental samples. She is also interested in environmental metabolomics. Naomi holds a Ph.D. in Environmental Chemistry from the University of Toronto.
Mathew Teeter, Ph.D.
Business Manager/Research Scientist - Light Stable Isotopes
Matt took over the responsibilities of Business Manager for the Water Quality Centre in September 2022. He holds a Ph.D. in Bioarchaeology from the University of Western Ontario. Matt is a biological anthropologist with interests in using stable isotope analyses to reconstruct past environments and human diets to better understand the implication of those on ancient human health and human/landscape relationships. He is the business manager and principal operator of all light stable isotope mass spectrometers in the WQC.
