Navigating Accessibility and Student Support as a GTA

Join staff from the TGSA, the Trent Teaching Commons, and Student Accessibility Services (SAS) for a lunch and learn focused on supporting students with disabilities. Topics for discussion will include some practical information about the accommodation process, what the "Duty to Inquire" means in practice, the role of GTAs in supporting and implementing accommodations, what to do when questions or concerns come up, and when and how to connect with SAS.
This event is hyflex, and participants can choose to come in person for lunch at noon (in BL 411, followed by the in-person presentation), or, just join us for the presentation online at 12:30pm.

Responding to Difficult Classroom Situations

Whether intervening in conflicts between students during a heated discussion or conversing with a student who is disappointed in their mark, many GTAs find responding to unexpected or difficult situations in the classroom challenging.
The Trent Teaching Commons and Dr. Mara Heiber invite you to join us for a special professional development day designed to help GTAs create strategies for responding to challenging classroom situations. We will use interactive and dynamic conversations to anticipate and imagine responses to common classroom scenarios. Through these activities, participants will work collaboratively to develop a “cheat sheet,” an innovative tool designed by Dr. Heiber that involves identifying specific language GTAs can use to respond to unexpected and challenging classroom situations. Lunch will be provided and all participants who successfully complete the program will earn a provincially-recognized micro-credential.
