Conservation Biology
In this first and only program of its kind in Canada, Conservation Biology students at Trent analyze the decline of biological diversity and study solutions to this global crisis.
In the classroom, you will gain foundational expertise in subjects like ecology, animal and plant diversity, evolution, wildlife behavior, and ecological genetics. Outside the classroom, you will study living subjects first-hand alongside practicing conservationists and biologists in Trent’s second-to-none outdoor laboratories, including 11 on-campus nature areas.
With two degree pathway options, the fourth-year work placement or the five-year co-op stream, this program offers multiple opportunities to hone career skills in science, research, communications and critical thinking.
Accelerated Masters
Fast-track your education, by earning your M.Sc. in Environmental & Life Sciences in only 12-20 months of graduating from your Honours B.Sc.
Species are disappearing at a pace unprecedented in human history. Be part of the solution by becoming an expert capable of creating innovative techniques and tactics to counteract the growing loss of wildlife and their habitat.
Trent's paid co-op is an opportunity for you to gain work-integrated experiential learning that will help you get a head start on your career. The Conservation Biology co-op assists graduating students in achieving a competitive edge while generating experience within a wide range of sectors.
Specifically, paid co-op gives you a chance to obtain 12 months of practical experience on the job, develop or enhance technical skills, explore career options, network with a variety of individuals and organizations, learn from mentors, enhance communication and presentation skills, and develop technical writing skills.
Traditionally there are three co-op work terms of paid employment, each four months long, 35 hours/week, giving students the opportunity to manage well-defined special projects at an organization. With the Conservation Biology co-op, students are encouraged to combine two work terms back-to-back creating an eight-month opportunity with one employer.
- Accelerate your career through the five-year co-op stream with paid work terms where you will work with groups such as the Ministry of Natural Resources & Forestry, Nature Conservancy Canada, Toronto Zoo, and Parks Canada
- Choose the four-year placement option and spend the final eight months of your degree gaining hands-on-experience in the field working with a sector organization, such as a fish hatchery, Riverview Park and Zoo, Otonabee Regional Conservation Association, to name a few.
- Work in state-of-the-art research labs like Trent’s Natural Resources DNA Profiling & Forensic Centre, and outdoors in our on-campus nature areas
- Conduct your own research through a fourth-year honours thesis project supervised by an expert in Conservation Biology
